I have been a lifelong asthmatic, but always very light and normally controlled by breathing and an occasional puff from an albuterol inhaler.

About 15 years ago, I started having issues with wheezing at night, and my pulmonary doctor put me on Azmacort, an inhalable steroid. It was wonderful - NEVER had an issue and I was taking the absolute lowest dosage possible - 1 puff in the morning, 1 at night.

Now, around 1 year ago, I started having some real issues with a hacking cough. I went to my pulmonary, had a pulmonary function test, an examination by the doc, and a chest x-ray. Everything pointed to me being as healthy as an ox - my PFT was better than I had 5 years ago, and I am over 40. Still, the hacking cough wouldn't go away.

After giving it some thought, I started thinking about my medication. You see, Azmacort was pulled because it uses CFCs and allegedly they are bad for the environment ($&*!# tree huggers!). My doc switched me to Flovent - which is right when I started having the cough.

I searched the Internet and found others had the same exact issue! I knew it was related to the change in meds, but now I am in a pickle - I can't go back to Azmacort, and I don't believe any of the replacement meds with work.

My use of inhalable steroids was very light - I really tried to wean myself off, but the single puff morning and night was nothing, and it kept me comfortable. Now, I sound like an 80 year old geezer...I really need to get back to where I was a year ago.

Anyone have a similar issue? Any recommendations?
