Hey All, I just moved to Lloydminster last week. I'm up for meeting new people and whatnot. I don't have an F-car, but hey, I love'em just the same as someone who does. Anyone else happen to exist in Lloyd? Dave
Actually it is on highway 16 150 miles east of edmonton and a little south. The Alberta / Saskatchewan border is the towns main street. Only city in canada divided by a provincial border.
I've been to Lloydminster before as I was curious how a city divided up by 2 provinces can work with only 1 city hall (1 Mayor) located on the AB side of the line. Also, both AB, and SK have different times zones I believe. How does that work? I also remember going to a phone booth on the AB side which had a Telus phone book with SK listings later in the book. And then I went across the street to SK, and on that side of the line, a SaskTel phone book with AB listings later in the book. A very unique city indeed! Best, Joel
It operates under a special charter from the two provinces. They divided up the responsibilities for the provinces. Primary education is Sask. High school Alberta. Hospital Sask. Property taxes Sask. Lloydminster was started in 1903 in the Northwest Territories then the provinces were formed in 1905 and eventually there was a village in Alberta and a town in Saskatchewan. Not sure when the charter was formed to let it be one city in Alberta and Sask. The time zone is arbitary.. for us in Lloydminster it is about 30 miles east near Maidstone Saskatchewan where the time changes. You just get used to dealing with it.
