Thanks Mike, I see you made a great choice to with your 84! The one thing I haven't found for the car is a Ferrari Group here in North Eastern Florida. Was easy to find both Studebaker/Avanti & Ford, both active groups. Doug Crall
Douglas: Congrats!- I have an 85'qv GTS- red/tan also- I've had it for one year next month- absolutely a blast to drive and has been a great car- you'll love it more as time goes by. My car even started out in Florida as well. (Just change the fuseblocks to Birdman's and relays too) Enjoy !!!
I am so glad to hear that someone is not afraid of a 308 with 50K on the clock. Sounds like a good buy on your part. Good luck with it.
Mine had 76K when I baught mine but previous owner had a 60K mile service done by FOSF in Mill Valley CA. 3K miles ago and gave me the full dealers invoce and document, I called the dealership after purchasing the car to verify the work and invoice given to me by the previous owner and sure enough everything is confirmed with total amount of $13.000 paid. I paid $29,500 for my 84 GTS QV Red/Tan
I am thinking about going to the Concorso in August. A member said that his 85 308 will be there along with others. This may be my opportunity to finally see if I can safely drive the car at my height. I have also been thinking. I grew up with Corvettes. My Dad and I restored his red 64 Stingray...everything from the engine to replacing the fiberglass rear panels because the person before (Dad had, sold, Dad bought back) put flared wheel wells, different engine, different hood, etc. Now it is all original. My Mom had a red 1979 Vette new and sold it in 1998 with 20k miles. They also have two other Vettes with low miles. My Z06 was dusted and covered when I drove it to work. My point is that neither I nor my family has ever owned a sports car with more than 50k miles on it. We also keep them impeccably clean. If someone were to say, "Would you like a drivers 1969 L88 Corvette or a Concours 1969 L88 Corvette?" I would easily choose the Concours Vette. I don't plan on racing my car or taking it to the track. I plan on putting it in cars shows and driving it. There is a Crystal Cove meet every Saturday out here, in the Summer. Everyone brings their exotic cars. That's where I would drive it. I would also drive it down Ortega Hwy to where I work and PCH on the weekends. Therefore, out of the 3 choices given earlier in the post, I would have to say that I am looking for a Concours 1985 308. I am going to continue to research the car and take in all of the advice from F-Car owners. I appreciate all of the comments in this post. VERY NICE CAR PICTURE, Douglas!
YEEHA! I had the opportunity to sit in two 328 GTS's at the Crystal Cove car show today. One had the top on and the other had it stowed behind the seats. I CAN FIT!!! It is more comfortable (relatively speaking) with the top NOT behind the seats and when the top was on, my head did not hit the top! Can someone confirm that the 308 GTS has slightly more room? I have heard that it does because of less padding in the seat. Thanks!
Here is a Euro 308 that drove away before I could talk to the owner. The other is one of the 328's that I sat in. only way you'll fit is with the roof off, and even then, you'll suffer from 'Magnumitis'. Next time you get a chance, watch a Magnum rerun and you'll notice 'Thomas' has a great view of the roof line and not much else. Also notice he NEVER enters the car normally, he always pops in and slides down... Get a GTB and you -might- just barely fit, but even that's gonna be T I G H T. And, if you have much of a gut, don't even think about it...
greg328 in the post: Headroom... 308 GTB vs. GT4 said "BigTex and I are the same height-6'3", and I also have seat fully back and reclined. I have 1" of clearance, pretty amazing, considering the low roofline. (308 GTB) I heard that 328s have less room because the seat bottoms are thicker."
I dont care what you intend to do with the car after you buy it, but when you buy a car, dont we all expect the same things? That it will run about the same as a new car and be about as reliable? Doctor Tom is right all the way around, this car needs a full 30K service bumper to bumper and all hoses and rubber replaced. Period! These cars burn to the ground because of bad fuel hoses. They bend valves and can mash pistons and turn cylinder heads into door stops if the timing belt breaks. Also, just because you "intend" to fix it yourself, isnt your time worth anything? When I play automechanic on my own car, I figure I am saving myself $100 per hour. So thats what I feel its worth. If you dont feel your time is worth anything, your only screwing yourself. Ferrari recommend the belts replaced every three years, some feel overkill. Many others feel every 5 years, a few feel 7 years. At any rate, pushed out as far as anyone normally will go, its due. It was due in 1992, and again in 1999. But its really due now, and just because we dont want to see you get screwed, we are offering good advice and trying to get you to run, or negotiate with the seller. The cost of a full automobile bumper to bumper 30K service at a Ferrari dealership should be negotiated into the deal. It wont be such a nice concourse car with the motor blown up or the car burned to the ground.
Thank you for the feedback about getting maintenance on a car like this. If I do decide on this car, the mechanic doing the PPI will probably say the same. Now I can say "That's what the guys on the forum said." My question now is: Is there more or less or same room for the driver in a 308 GTS compared to a 328GTS? Should I start a new thread? greg328 in the post: Headroom... 308 GTB vs. GT4 said "BigTex and I are the same height-6'3", and I also have seat fully back and reclined. I believe you own a 328GTS now. Thanks!
