Do you think that riding dirt bikes has made you into a better car driver?

Personally, I wish that it was mandatory that every newbie motorcycle had to learn in the dirt first. I know that being a dirt dobber makes you a better street rider, but does this carry over to cars?

    I think yes, because:

    1. Riding rough stuff on bikes enables you to hang loose when things turn nasty in a car. Instead of mailing it in, you learn that you can ride out some pretty nasty stuff in one piece if you avoid freezing up. Don't know if I'm making any sense here. But when I raced bikes, my vision would narrow down to almost a gun sight. I still saw stuff on the perimeter, but the key was seeing my way to daylight. (It's kinda funny. I only started going fast after I realized that I was holding my breath in the corners. But by getting into a Zen like state, I was more relaxed and went faster!)

    2. One lesson I learned the hard way was to NOT look at things you wanted to avoid. Someone falls in front of you, don't look at em. If you do, you will T-Bone the poor fool. But if you look to daylight, there lies salvation.

    3. On rough washboard surfaces, the faster you go, the smoother it gets.

    4. The worse the surface, the smoother you have to ride/drive.

    What do you guys think?

I would have to agree with that one since i think that it makes you more aware of your surrounding and that makes you less likely to be caught by suprise. I think the real proof is take a look at Jeff Ward. Only rider to win a national chanpionship in 125, 250 and 500cc classes along with supercross. He switched to 4 wheels and does quite well. then switches to super moto and almost wins the championship.

fI tend to agree also. When riding on the dirt or on asphalt track at speed, you are very focused. Yes, you develop both your tunnel and peripheral vision. You are aware of what is going on around you but more focused on what is going on in front of you. You also develop the sense to look further down the track and anticipate what is going to happen. It helps you choose better lines because you are so connected to the track.

And you are absolutely right about not looking at a downed rider. Keep focused on your line and go for it. If someone falls in your line, always have an escape line predetermined. This is the same in snow skiing. Always look where you want to go and your body will send you in that direction.

Back to the picture of the rider on the Maico from Texas

    Ferraripete:
It is Steve Stackable. I rode against him on many occasions. Never had the opportunity to ride with Adolf Weil.

The picture of the KX is none other than Jeff Ward in 1987. that was the first year that Kawasaki placed the suspension linkage under the swingawm instead of above it.

As for the mini picture #63 is Ezra Lusk and #30 is Damon Huffman

Lets see the Bulltaco rider is Jim Pomeroy and the Honda rider is Chuck sun or Donny Hansen?????

How about (Rocket) Rex Staten on the Honda and 1969 250cc World Champion, Bengt Aberg, from the picture of the three guys.

How about my old buddy Wyman Priddy, who taught me how to fall. We taught some MX schools together for a short time. I learned well from him. I think I could have been his stunt double here.
