We're thinking about driving up from SoCal to look around Monterey for a long weekend in a couple of weeks from now. We are looking for a hotel or Bed and Breakfast that's decent but not major $$ somewhere in the area. Just me and the wife going and it would be good to get a referral rather than just pick one of the major hotels.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

This is just a motel. Nuthin fancy, but doable. Great location. Lots of parking. Decent rates. I stay here when I go to Laguna.

Both of these are a little spendy but worth it.

    Tickle Pink Inn

    Highlands Inn

They are located right next to each other in Carmel Highlands ( just south of monterey ). My wife and I switch off between these two. The best room is one of the six suites at the Tickle Pink Inn.

You can try Asilomar. It's next to Spanish Bay at about 1/4 the price. Not nearly as nice, but the same view of the ocean and clean.

Second the recommendation for the Highlands Inn, Carmel Highlands.

PT 328: I haven't been to Tickle Pink, do you think it beats the Highlands spa suite?

Ben, I've stayed at suites of both. Tickle Pink Inn is closer to a Bed and Breakfast type of lodging, and a little more cozy. It does not have restaurant facility. I believe that Highlands Inn these days has mostly hotel rooms only. Most if not all suites had been converted to Hyatt vacation homes.

The Spin Drift Inn is very nice and right on the water. If I recall correctly it's moderately priced. It's probably off season now so you may be able to get a good rate.

    Hi Mark,

Is that an Old English puppy? Love them. Try the Bernardus Lodge in nearby Carmel. The wwo restaurants at the Lodge are great:

If you want a well located hotel on the wharf, nothing fancy but well run, try the Portola Plaza. It is the site of the RM auction in august. We stay there every year for the Pebble /Monterey car week. It's not a resort, simply a place to unpack your stuff and sleep.

If you want the most sublime experience in hotels the Post Inn at Big Sur is the best hotel on the planet. A little isolated but that's why you go there.

Don't know what you consider major $$, but the Seven Gables Inn (www.pginns.com) is a beautiful place. Right on the bay, just down from the aquarium.
