I love the view, and the raw oysters at the Franciscan at Fishermans wharf. There are no other good restaraunts at all near there imho. Good bar too. You could try to fit in at the Slanted Door in the ferry building. Great bar there.

    Dan,

The best steak I've found was at Alexander's in Cupertino...is Alfred's better?

I've been to Alexanders - steaks are pretty personal but I love Alfred's more. Besides, their wall of scotch is a modern marvel

Aqua is about a block from you.

Also, I had lunch today at a place a few doors down from Aqua on California which was pretty good too - forgot the name, but I hear you can't get a table there for dinner, so it probably doesn't matter.

You don't "have" to stay in the city though...

You can easily take the ferry to Scott's in Jack London Sq...

    -or-

There's also a restaurant called (IIRC) Asena (not sure the spelling is correct) in Alameda that's pretty good too.

WOW, you had a different experience that I had. Alexander's wouldn't even make my top 10. The quality of the steak was marginal and the rest of the food was uninspired.

Best steak I have had in the South bay was at Grill On The Alley. Then again I don't really care for fillet. Give me a good rib or NY any time.

Morton's was also just ok. Not spectacular.

Haven't tried Alfred's but I guess I will have to give it a run.

One more thing. His question as "really good sit down place". Scotts is a reasonable chain place but not what I would call 'really good'.

Haven't been to the city much lately so hard to say for sure. Of course Ruth's Chris has always put out a good steak. Out of the steak catagory I have had several great meals at Boulevard, it has been over a year so can't say if it has changed.

Morton's and Ruth's pale in comparison to the steaks I've had at Alexanders. Their valentines day menu was one of the best meals of my life. Weird you didn't like their meat, I believe it is all grade prime, hard to mess that up.

    I'd give it another chance.

Sundance on El Camino was the worst "fancy meal" I've ever had. Guess it helps to actually serve the right meal and then not blame it on me. Rude rude rude.

If you want to impress a client (and they're paying) the Carnelian Room is tough to beat. Absolutely EPIC views, decent wine list, comprises the entire top floor of the BofA building. http://carnelianroom.com/

They have a dish cooked/served at your table over open flame. I've had it several times; while I do not recall the name the taste is etched in my memory forever.

If you REALLY want to impress, or spend time with a lady friend, the private dining rooms are like none other.

I wonder if I can land a hielo on the roof...

Interesting. I was always a big fan of Carnelian room's wine list and view, but everytime i've eaten there (and i've given it more than it's fair share of chances) i have been sorely disappointed.
