There were 39 official production 250 GTOs. There may have been several racing examples as well. I believe all 39 production units are still alive and well.

I asked Luca D. in PR at FNA this question over the summer. He said, "Of the 39 made, 43 are still known to exist."

His point is that as the cars crashed, they were often split into 2 or more cars. Engine in a new chassis, repaired chassis with a home-brew motor, etc.

There are also some GTOs that have identical serial numbers due to some questionable circumstances. Some as a result of what you describe above and some due to out and out misrepresentation. There were also cars that carried the specification of the GTO prior to "production" which are now being referred to as "the first GTOs". I'll do some research and provide serial numbers.

Considering early cars like the Testa Rossa and GTO, are commanding more than $5 million and $9 million US respectively, its not surprising all examples or more are existing. Construction costs are rarely in excess of 5.0 % of the vehicle's value so there is lots of room for shenanigans.

Get Keith Bluemel's book. All 39 are well documented.
