On my 2009 F430, there's a lot of gouges on the plastic part under my steering column, where the previous owner missed the ignition switch and gouged the piece with his key.

I want to remove that piece to send to StickyRX. I can see there's two screws underneath the panel. Is there anything else I should be worried about before I try to remove it?

Did this last winter... if memory serves there are several screws underneath that hold the bottom piece to the top. Remove the screws (5 I think?) and position the steering wheel all the way out and down. The bottom should unclip from the top piece very easily and drop off. Getting the top piece out is far trickier. There's a leather flap on the top that's glued down to the top piece; you'll have to pry that off. Took a lot of maneuvering, but eventually got both the top and bottom sections off.

Here is a DIY video on Youtube. Shows not only the steering column but other sticky part removal.

It is a pain to get the upper shroud out if it is like the 360. The metal strap that limits the drop of the steering column had to be completely removed for to allow me to fully drop down the steering column. It takes a lot of careful finagling upper shroud around to get it out. Do not force it or you will brake off the screw mounting posts. I had to epoxy one of mine back after breaking it.
Nothing wrong with Sticky RX but it makes no sense not to de-sticky the panels with 91% isopropyl alcohol yourself. Those key gouges are in the sticky stuff and not all the way into the plastic. If you screw it up, then send it off to Sticky RX.

There are 5 total. 3 in a triangle configuration that holds the part to the steering column. And 2 that attaches the top piece to the bottom piece. The plastic towers that joins them comes apart. There is a strip of adhesive tape that runs along the top cap that attaches to the leather shroud.
I removed the coating when I cleaned mine ..but it did not look very good. I painted them flat black. I will post pics soon.

    It really is not difficult.

Wow I’m glad I checked with you guys before I attempted it. My top piece is in great shape, I’ll just strip the bottom piece with alcohol and see how it looks.

The bottom piece looks like the guy had a seizure with the key in his hand lol.

    Yes,
Originally I was going to use my airbrush to spray but I ran a test with flat black spray paint (rust-oleum high performance enamel pro) and let it cure for 2 days. I was going to spray flat clear coat over the top but it product a slight shine so I decided that the flat black would be durable enough.

    I hope this helps.

Oh....one important part is that I used a adhesion promoter before spraying the paint. This is important!!!

Is the adhesion promoter a spray can too? Is it mad by Rustoleum?

This scratch issue at the steering column is common to all F430's.
    You should see mine.

I will refinish mine soon with guidance from Flea7.

Stickyrx does great work! I wouldn't compare my DIY to their work....They are pros....but I am happy with my results. :)

What did they charge you to refinish the surround?

Use Greased Lightning as a cleaner. Works fabulous and very fast and no residue - just wash it off with dish soap after using cloth towels to remove the goop. Just use lots of cheap cloths - bought a package at Home Depot. Used it on my steering surround and all other non-switch sticky parts and they look like new! Alcohol only for tiny buttons like the glove box release.

Corey, it was about $300 for both upper and lower pieces.

Sorry a little off topic, but do you think the removal is the same on a 458? I was able to remove the shroud easily on my 430 earlier, but need to do it for my 458. Searched the threads and could not find anything.
