    Hello Gentlemen,

Whilst visitng my local Sears Craftsman Dept., the only picks I could find were metal. I'm in the midst of R&R-ing my Shift Shaft Seals and need the pick to be softer (nylon), than the alum. engine case, as to not to scar it.
Anyone kow of a good source for this item?

As always, I appreciative of your responses.

    Chris.

IMHO, you're overly concerned with this issue.

It's highly unlikely that you'll find a plastic pick the right shape.

Just get a hook shaped metal pick & go slow. The pick doesn't need to go all the way under the ring, you can just hook it into the side of the ring & give it a twist to pop the ring out.

Alternatively, blunt the end of the pick with a file or whetstone so it's pretty rounded & hook it under the ring.

No one has ever reported scratching the bottom of the seal ring groove with a metal pick.

TIP: Thoroughly degrease the groove before installing the new ring, then put a smear of Permatex Hylomar in the bottom of the groove before installing the new seal. The permatex does a great job ensuring a good seal, & never sets up.

Check you Yellow Pages for a company that sells o-rings and hydraulic lines, they usually give the nylon picks away for free if you buy a few dollars worth of materials.

Parker Seal gives them away. Mine has 1-800-C-PARKER molded into it. Call them for the nearest industrial O-Ring dealer.
