Well, you'd really enjoy the ride up I-95, as it takes you up into Northeast Maine instead of into Montreal. :)

From NY, generally the fastest way is up I-87. But for a more enjoyable ride, take I-95 to I-91 North in CT, then 91 thru Mass and into VT. Get onto I-89 there, but get off soon thereafter and go North/Northwest thru the Green Mountains. Lots of impressive, fun mountain roads, probably the best east of the Mississippi.

    vty,

did that once before when i went to toronto, was on some 2 lane mountain roads, lots of curve and beautiful view, except contantly stuck behind trucks and could not go over 50mph for 2 hrs. fock dat shiet.

Love the twisties and the scenic (esp. in my cabriolet with top down!) but 50 mph...ugh! that is 2nd gear... i might catch and f-caravan with some DC guys so I will travel their route....might be best to just get my butt up there in the interstate asap.

The ride up I-87 from Albany is actually pretty nice and pretty scenic. You can get off in Saratoga, drive through the town and stop for lunch. Or get off at Lake George, drive up the west side of the lake and stop for lunch at The Sagamore or in the little town of Bolton's Landing. Basically, you can hop on and off of I-87 in a number of places and just venture around a little bit. And the ride up I-87 is a fun one. Just watch out for the NY troopers. They have no sense of humor whatsoever up there.

BTW, forgot to mention it -- expect a back-up at the border crossing on I-87. There is always a line, in both directions. If you have a US passport, take it with you. It's not mandatory, but these days having it makes coming back that much easier. I just leave it sitting on the center console so the US Customs Agent sees it when he/she sticks his/her head in the window to check things out. If they ask for ID, I give them the passport and that's that.

Forgot to mention - in Vermont, it's legal to pass on the double yellow (except where signs indicate that no passing is allowed, and in school zones). So no need to be one of those chumps that gets stuck behind slow vehicles for two hours. :)

Oh, and if you take the back roads through VT, there is a little border station that you can take that allows you to bypass the huge jams at I-87 and I-89.

If you go through Saratoga, i highly recommend Hattie's Chicken Shack, the peach cobbler is first rate, and the fried chicken is the real deal.
