I was looking at this car, as well. Once I found the posts on this site, I knew something had to be off with the car. I have a friend near the car in Springfield, and he has seen a red 1990 TR - not a gray one. With no photos of the VIN, I agree that this must be a hoax. I've stopped my pursuit of this one. Let me know how you turn out on this one. Thanks.

I did ask him for pix of the VIN and here is the reply I got:

    "Hi again,
I have received about 320 e-mails from people who want to buy the car and I rally don’t want to west my time..... the total price including shipping cost is $20,000. I'm really sorry but as I told you before the car is located in Springfield and I'm in Chicago-IL and I will come home to ship the car just when I will be sure that I have a serious buyer just when I will receive the payment(deposit) confirmation from ebay motors. Then you will have 3 days to inspect the car and if is not what I say if is not exactly as in my add you will receive a full refund from ebay motors. The car will be inspected and evaluated by eBay's team so there is no need to ask me about it's condition as long it will be a guaranteed purchase by eBay. If you are still interested for this car please let me know your full name and full address for shipping, and I will forward the details to eBay motors.
    Thank you, Fernando "

No pix of the VIN no other info...
Yeah maybe i'll give this guy my Social security and credit card numbers too! NOT! I agree if he needs $ fast and has a 70k asset he can get a loan from a bank or a shark or a pawnshop. We should keep our eye on this one.

    Hi gang,
1 First time I see somebody on eBay who's getting the shipping costs on him...
2 Family funeral:gives a delay to think it over how to be the best crook...
3 Never crashed, abused or raced:did he got the car straight from Italy?
4 I need to sell it fast:aren't there potential buyers immediatly around for 20K? No,because "arround" means inspection, and he knows something is wrong with this one...
5 The car is in Springfield but he's in Chicago? He can't come over soon?
Well,I would come over for those 20K,knowing that I need the money...
6 Shipping companies are always OK:so the buyer never sees the seller's face...My bet:HIMSELF will be the shipping agent...to deliver a wrong car and to collect 20K...
7 "If you decide to buy,all the paperwork is ready and signed"...WOW,who's is giving away his nice Ferrari WITH SIGNED PAPERWORK without having the bucks in the pocket,or better, without being sure the buyer really buys???
Oh man are we on Star Trek or what???
8 "eBay suggested that we make it trough eBay"...?????Well,I never heard eBay suggesting to finish business out of eBay,it is(in Europe ath least)against their rules...
    You want to buy?
    Follow my instyructions:
Ask him for :a copy of his pasport or driver's licinse.
a copy of the paperwork(same name on pink slip)
    a phone number(landline,not portable phone)
the adress and tel. number of the garage that serviced the car, with eventually a picture of the book(page with the VIN number on it,so we know that the book is the correct one for the car...
No emails trough Yahoo!,Hotmail or so,but only trough attributated internetservers.
    No Western Money or Moneygram...
Payment from account to account,no cash please...
If I (try to)sell a car,I ALWAYS include a pic of my pasport with my name(make your national number last to caracters unreadeble),this is guaranteed 100% confidance for the buyer,because...you will be seen on the pic's you took from the car(be sure to be on it!!)
Goes both ways:take or at least try,a picture a the car you want to buy, with the seller NEXT to the car:if he's running away or hiding, ask yourself why....
Hope somebody got a little help with these ones...

    WARNING WILL ROBINSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This IS a scam, they used to send out emails about an "Ebay Escrow account". This is the SAME thing. You are to send a deposit without any confirmation that the car exists.

I "played" with a guy that was doing this to me, claimed a 300GTC in NJ was for sale for a way low amount, sent me the same email (but used "escrow" statement). TOLD HIM I HAD TO SPEAK TO HIM BY PHONE, sent 3 more emails. TRACED THE USERS NAME to NYC, told him I'd call him (got number via yellow pages online based on name and locationi). He balked and gave me a mobile number listed in KY.

E-mail would most likely trace to a foreign country.

    WARNING WILL ROBINSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yeah,James is fully right!
With a LITTLE commin sense and suspiciousness, crooks ans escrows are very very easy to find....
IMO the only "cheap but straight" Ferraris can be bought only trough the state:impounded or confiscated vehicules,or the death of somebody, and the car has to go quick...

I have no experience with Ebay. I have heard (once or twice) that Ebay is not exactly friendly when it comes to disputes.

However, the bigger thing is if the user wants you to use something LIKE Ebay (such as an Ebay Escrow company . . . . . . . . . um, they don't exist...!!!).

A deposit directly using ebay's "buy it now" in theory should work. But I don't think ebay takes deposits directly, they usually leave that to the people in the transaction which sellers use PayPal (also have heard once or twice that PayPal isn't very friendly in disputes).

Personally, I wouldn't buy a car (nor put a deposit down) site unseen without TALKING to someone on the phone. Emails back and forth just SCREAMS its a scam. Oh, and a real "land line" phone. Too easy to get "throw away" cells that are basically non-traceable (without major hassle for those of us not in Law Enforcement).

Again, this is only my opinion, but I would say that if you cannot get the seller to give you a land line to chat with him, its a scam.

Springfield, Mass? There was a guy not too long ago who had a chop shop/stolen car gig going with about 8 people who was busted (but only him and his girlfriend) after stealing a friend of mine's Porsche from Rennlist (set up shop in Springfield IIRC). If an actual car is being sold - its probably hot or has something hidden. Read the thread about the Bad Dealer, Bad Car concerning a 328, then run far far away from this.
