Well, as stated in my thread "GT3 or GT-R", we are looking for a new car for my mother to be used as a DD. We have decided to go with the 996 Turbo. Were driving down to Hialeah tomorrow. Just wondering if any of you guys have some info on it. Thank you! BTW, my mom says thanks for all the info http://www.maroone.com/index.cfm?vehicle=2002_Porsche_911&action=InventorySearch&subaction=SearchDetailUsed&InventoryID=17409266&inventorytype=Used&preauctionsearch=&fromSearchList&franchiseid=2180
Well, the description says the car has "plush beige leather seats" and the photos show black......but then again, it is a Ford store selling it, and if you change around a letter or two in their dealership name you'll get my drift.
lol. Car looks clean and with low mileage. Probably a third car from the original owner who only drove it on weekends.
That doesn't mean it is good car or a bad car though........you gotta do your due diligence just like you would buying the same car from a P-dealer.
Luckyily for us, it's either hot, or hot and wet. So, I'd say were good there. Don't have to worry about ice or snow. Are they reliable?
Reliable, yes. If I recall correctly, they had a couple of small issues. But with 16k miles, you ought to be ok. It seems like a good price. Get a PPI. I understand the purists who want to toss it around on a track, but why would one want to convert a DD to RWD? IMO, the AWD is this car's strong point.
Are they reliable........? Insofar as a 400HP AWD twin turbo technologically advanced sports can be........yes. I've sold over 1,000 of them in the last 20 years and owned over 25.......having said that, they were also designed by humans, built by humans, driven by humans and get fixed by humans.......but if you had to choose from all the other "exotic" cars out there on a purely subjective reliability basis, Porsche is the way to go.
I think those are HRE's. Big bucks but heavy. I was actually "looking" at that car on the net, not really a buyer but trying to talk the wife into one. That is an incredible deal if everything checks out. Look for Type2 over-revs in a PPI done by a dealer. Check out Volk T37's as well. You can probably buy/sell/swap at Rennlist/Pelican/ or 6speed.
BTW a TT is a much better choice than a GT3 for a Daily Driver. 996TT's are pretty bulletproof but have a competent dealer do a PPI.
There are lots of 996TT´s in the low 40´s..............and that is a good tip from Light Guy..........the dealer can scan the ECU and see how many times the driver has bounced off the rev limiter (IIRC type 1), as well as how many times he/she has over revved when downshifting which IIRC is when the rev limiter does not work and is called the type 2. They use this stat to deny warranty on questionable claimes for engine damage.
