Thanks again for the help. This 1981 308Gtsi red/tan car appears to have a pristine interior and is advertised on a well known auction site. The seller lives 20 miles from me. I'm trying to see it in person, but before I do I was hoping that someone on this forum may have information about this car.

For those who are familiar with the 308 line, any suggestions about common fault areas and related thoughts are welcome.

    Thanks again

Yes I also saw the car on Ebay...looks to be a real nice example. If you go look at the car I'd also be curious as to what it's like in person if you'd be so kind...I don't live as close as you do or I'd go see it. I'm also looking at 308's right now and have not found any yet worth buying.

Problem areas are: slow windows, hard shifting or trouble engauging gears, timing belts, old brittle fuel hoses, high idle due to vac leaks or defective warm up regulator (WUR $700 or more), electrical problems (some things wont work), exhaust leaks ($5k fix to replace the exhaust), metric wheels (tires are real expensive $400ea), AC not working ($2K fix), levers on the console broken, bad brake seals from sitting (check for black or dark brake fluid), steering that pulls or a shuddering steering wheel indicates possible suspention components or brake rotors, crappy paint or repairs and wasted interiors (watch out for bad dye jobs and carpet paint...man I hate that crap!!) some people should be slapped for using that stuff LOL. If I encounter stiff painted carpets...I'm done right there...if they'll cob up the carpet...what else are they trying to cover up?

The car you are speaking of doesn't appear to have these "normal" issues...looks to be a decent car but I have not driven it which is the real test. His videos appear to show what the car is and I can't see anything wrong with it from that. We'll probably be bidding against each other (and many others) next Saturday. I personally think it's a good car from the information that's available...but then again, until you see it and drive it, you can't know for 100% sure what it is. He's very firm on letting the auction run it's course and not interested in offers...ask me how I know ;-)

If you check it out and don't mind telling me what you thought that would be very decent of you. I am just another potential buyer...there's no guarantee either you or I will win the car. I'm sure this one won't be a steal and the early bidders are driving the price real high early in the auction. Never understood why people do that...it just makes the final price that much higher sometimes. I have a limit as to what I will spend...if I miss this one...there's more ;-) but this one looks to be a good example. Been looking for over a year now...driven a few...most of them have been tortured cars owned by people that have no idea how to maintain them and they go down hill fast. You really don't want a car like that. There's not a part on these cars you can buy for less than $100 LOL and if you get into major component issues you'd better have a REALLY fat wallet. I don't want to buy someone else problem and have a bad experience too...that's the main thing to look out for ;-) Good luck to ya...see ya there next Saturday ;-)

BTW I am in no way taunting you...the bidding will be what it is and someone will win...might not either one of us. I'm sure everybody interested will go as much as they can affford to spend and if they miss out...wait on the next nice one ;-) The seller did a good job representing the car...makes ya wanna just jump in and drive it LOL. Feel free to PM me or email [email protected]
we are not rivals just bidding on the same nice car. Someone will win it...might not be either if us. Take care...MarkG

Hi , , I had a look at the car on e-bay , it's looks nice for a car of this age. I bought car 36629 ( that makes it 257 cars away on the original production line ) about 2 years ago and it had not been looked after so I can give you a bit of a worse case scenario.

The water pump had just been repaired
The fuel filler neck hose was totally rotten and was an extreme fire hazard
    Air-con needs re-sealing and re-gassing ( if there's no gas then there is a leak )
Sway bar rubbers were rotten and need replacing
Suspension arm bushes at the outside of the A-arms had broken free and need replacing
Inner suspension rubbers were rotten ( they can seem still quite tight if the car has not been driven for months , they get wobbly after regular use )
Coolant reserve tank was rusted through
Oli pressure sender was faulty giving eratic readings ( new sender indicates the pump is excellent after all these years )
CV joint boots needed replacing + 1 dead CV joint
Rear wheel bearings were a little suspect , the nuts locking them were butchered beyond belief
Rear brakes were frozen and did not work .... that means the handbrake also did not work.
Speedo and speedo sender unit were both dead ( I think when the senders malfuction they can kill a speedo if left that way for a long time )
    Leaky windscreen seals

Now don't panic , this is my car which had been treated quite badly by a string of owners in England , , I have been able to fix all of the above by myself. An 81 308 is no piece of rocket science, just a lot of very well selected parts which work beautifully together.
Even when I picked my car up it could be driven quite fast and it felt very secure so it's not as though it will die on you at the first set of traffic lights. A wise person will make it their business to go through problems ( brakes first ) ASAP.

I see yours on e-bay , it looks very nice and it sounds like all the right things have been taken care of , , if the car is close maybe you can drop in and take it for a test drive ..... bidding is up to you. Personally I think it's very nice. 308's are always on e-bay so maybe you want to look over a few for a while to get a feel for what you want for a certain amount of dollars.
