My 11 year old daughter is playing a 3/4 violin and ready to move up to a 4/4 and I hate renting. Anyone know what is a good brand to look at purchasing and where to get it? Thanks, Jerry.

It's been a topic of great controversy. In fact, guys have been contacting me behind the scenes via AIM and email trying to get the scoop. LOL! They could have just looked in my profile the whole time...

I hear Stadivarius made some fair examples, although they will be pretty old...

Any instrument given the title Stradivarius is a premium item. Especially old ones that have been given great care.

www.harmonycentral.com has musical instrument reviews and www.epinions.com has reviews on everything on earth.

Another option is go to eBay and look up violins in the price range you are willing to spend and see what brands pop up. Once you know which brands are in your spending range, Google the brand name and add "review" to see what articles you can come up with.

Your school's music teacher should be familiar various brands and might be able to make a recommendation. Orchestra instruments for college level students can cost over $20,000. I'd guess $2000 will buy a good student instrument for her age, but I suspect most of her classmates will be playing $350 violins.

Once my lovely bride gets off the phone, I will quiz her on violins.

Among her many talents, she (although out of practice) is a fabulous violinist.

(Edit) - 1st - go to Bein & Fushi in Chicago, listen to what they tell you. Bow is as, or more important than the violin. Under appropriate circumstances they will ship to you to test and return as necessary.

She says lots of types you can get, ask an expert who you can take your daughter to and have her show them how she plays. You want bright on top and deep on the lower strings. The better the instrument, the more inspiring it can be for your daughter, too.

I've played violins for years, my wife and daughters do, too. I have purchased two off ebay. One was OK, the other was a piece of junk. The moral here is to buy in person, if possible. The violin teacher may be a good resource. Check the yellow pages, too to see who's a luthier in town. Try a few violins out (have your daughter do it) You will be amazed by the variation in tone quality. I personally dislike many of the new instruments, but that does not mean they are all bad. Made in China is not necessarily bad, either, any instrument probably would need to be professionally set up (bridge, strings, sound post).

I don't know how much you are planning to spend, but if your daughter is pretty interested now, a nice sounding instrument may keep her in it for a long time. Again, you'll be best to listen to a bunch. Finally, you'll need to select a bow. It makes a big difference. I'd suspect fiberglass is a no-no, but there are some new composite bows which are supposed to be pretty nice. Pernambuco is sort of a strandard in the wood bow, and prices, like for violins, are all over the board.

For a long-distance referral, I'd put trust in Laurence Anderson in Northfield, MN. I had him set up a couple of violins, and bought a cello from him. Excellent.

Don't limit yourself to new instruments; my daughter's teacher knew a dealer who had a lovely instrument, 105 years old, nice patina...well.... well used.... but nice sound and well made for $600. Oddly, I kinda feel like a caretaker, that it needs to really be taken care of for the people that will enjoy it in another 105 years.

It would surprise me if your instrucor does not have similar contacts.

Even though you hate renting, completely understandable, I would do so for at least a minimum point to see how she likes it. I played the violin and begged my parents to buy one for me, they declined. Good thing, b/c after a year I didn't really enjoy it that much. Quite a shame.

Roger that. Maybe I'll hold out for a few more months. Did you ever take up another instrument?

My wife was (is...) an excellent violonist.

She still has two violins, but frankly it depends a lot on the budget.
