Just got the 355 (see my other post). I'm so excited. Getting the Capristo's put on (the level 1 or quiet version if there is such a thing). Anyone know of a good set of used ones I can buy? I was told by a few people used may be the way to go - they are very well built and used can be half the cost?

No cats. Pretty high avg rpm level in 2nd and 3rd gear...I'm sure I never dropped below 4500 rpm...so valve was prob open the whole time.

Do you the hyperflow cats make it louder? I may be getting cats here at some point. Any decent horsepower gain to be had with the combo of Capristo and Hyperflows?

I have been watching Ferrari Chat for about a year for a Capristo and recently one came up for sale in the parts section at a significant discount off of new price. It was used on a dyno run, and was sold to me through the Capristo US dealer with a new warranty. They have been great to deal with. http://www.capristoexhaust.us/category-s/48.htm

With the remote control, my stage 3 runs quite with the bypass valve closed or loud and sweet with it set on the open position.

I would not do it, but there again. I suppose if you cant get the best, the Tubi will do for now. Until a Capristo equipped Ferrari busts by you and spoils your day:D

Hyperflow cats are still cats. They strangle the sound of a level 1 Capristo. The ONLY way to do it properly is to de-cat, (straight pipes) it is totally unmistakable and sounds like this...

Yes, thats right, its a guy called Cha who owns the 355 in question, he used to come on this forum a bit, funnily enough he lives about 5 miles away from me.
His videos are good and must have been responsible for many 355s having a decatted capristo fitted. Having heard his car in person i would say a level 1 decat cappy is PLENTY loud for anyone.

How much louder is the car with the straight pipes (no cats)?

The exhaust on a 355 goes through the cats with the bypass valve closed. Once the bypass valve opens it goes through the secondary y-pipe, which is basically a straight pipe. I have a stage 3 and cats on my 355 and a remote control for the bypass valve so that I can run it open on spirited runs, but still have the option of closing the bypass valve so that I do not wake everyone up in a 3 block radius.

My understanding is that the stage (1, 2 or 3) determines the loudness with the bypass valve open, it is virtually 2 mufflers in one. All of the stages are the same loudness with the bypass valve closed. So to try to get the "correct" sound by putting straight pipes on a stage 1, just does not make sense to me. The problem is that when the bypass valve closes (under 4,000 rpm or you when you let off the gas) the exhaust gas is routed through the "quite part" of the capristo. To get that F1 sound just keep the bypass valve open and you will have that sweet sound all of the time including low rpm, deceleration, heal-toe blips, etc.

A stage 3 with cats and a remote bypass valve control on a key fob, to me seems to be the best setup. But I am not an official Capristo representative (just a very happy customer!) Call these guys http://www.capristoexhaust.us/ who are the official US distributors for Capristo and speak with them to get the most accurate information.

PorscheGuy, Congratulations on the purchase of your fantastic 355. I am sure you will have a blast with it!

Here is a link to a sound clip of the stage 3 capristo with cats and the bypass valve open http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83c7StpU0cs (you can hear a scud, a 430, 308 and 348 in the background)

Just this morning I heard SKUSA exhaust set up and I have to say best sounding 355. If ever I own a 355 I would definitely go for Capristo Level 3 with bypass valve remote control.

Ive seen and heard loads of these cars now, with capristo stage 1,3, hyperflows , normal cats etc etc. If the cats are retained the sound is not as good as if 'straight pipes' are used. Its more the pureness of sound, the car in the videos I posted sounds like an f1 car. On these cars nothing comes close. Even if you have a stage 3 ,with cats, vs a level 1 decat, the decat sounds loads better, you can actually hear level 3 being strangled, the sound is flatter and not as piercing.

I am a VERY satisfied customer who purchased a Capristso Stage III and a Capristo exhaust bypass valve from Taurino Racing last September. Their customer service was A+, and on top of that Sonia Taurino has about the sexiest accent on the phone that you will ever hear. I almost wished that I would have had a problem with my order so that I would have had a reason to call her back and read through my order again.

All said and done the OP is after a second hand Capristo. So talk of the various levels may be irelevent. Second hand Cappys dont often come onto the market, and when they do they usualy get snapped up regardles of what level they are.
Thats why usualy a used Capristo buyer will resort to second best, either a Tubi or Nuvolari, trying to convince them selfs and others they made the right choice. Then spend the rest of there ownership wishing they had not ;)
I have heard of more than a few Tubi owners selling there systems for Cappys, i have never heard the reverse....have you :D

Coolhand, I agree with your comments on Taurino Racing. I placed my order online for the bypass valve remote, then picked up the phone to make sure they could ship the same day. Sonia, was already processing the order! It had not been but a minute or so since I placed it online.

Sambomydog, I agree with your comments as well. I have been looking for a used Capristo for about a year and just now found one. I could not believe that it was not already snapped up, only had a half hour of dyno testing and came with the new warrantee.

Bottom line is that it is unlikely PorscheGuy will find a used Capristo in the near future. Owning a 355 requires some maintenance and investment. I drove mine for nearly a year with an exhaust that others loved, but never seemed quite right to me. With the Capristo, it is like a whole different car. The difference in price between even a new Capristo and a used Tubi is small in comparison to the overall investment in the 355. Some prefer the Tubi or other exhaust. Personally, I could not be more happy with my Stage 3 Capristo. I have had straight pipes on and cats. For me I love this combination and have used the key fob to drive quietly by our friends helping keep the peace and safety on our highways avoiding the need for a roadside conversation.

Regardless, my advice would be not to compromise on the type of exhaust that you want. If you have the basic exhaust unit you prefer, you can fine tune the details to your setup to suit your preference.
