Stumbled across a set of scrapbook images taken in Germany in 1937-38. There are some wonderful photos of people who weren't aware that, in my wife's words, "the world was about to go to ****." In fact one of the last images in the set is a parade along a narrow cobblestone street, with a Swastika flag following ominously behind.

I've practically developed a crush on this beautiful girl, Liesl, who traveled the German countryside with a camera and whose fate is lost to history.

Anyway, there's a few images of her a sporty, elegant Mercedes cabriolet. From notations, it appears to belong to a landowner/farmer in one of the towns she visited.

After some searching I found an identical model, identified as a W08 series Nurburg 500 cabriolet. This was an 8 cylinder car that predated the 500/540k and was not as powerful as the SSK.

I'd love to find out more about this particular body style, how many were made, etc. It seems most of the 500 models that survived were built as limos or sedans. Maybe this was designed by a coachbuilder such as Auer? Or a standard catalog body?

Can anyone suggest any references for these lesser known models?

Great idea! it didn't occur to me that MB had a classic center branch in the US. Will give that a shot.

I took a look at prewarcar.com and thought it was a great.

But, I would definitely start with MB Classic first. Actually, I was just there Tuesday...I should have printed your pics and showed it to them. They have access to archives and of course to MB historians and individuals in Germany in the know.

If ever in the area, it is worth a look as it truly is like a museum. Classic MBs for sale in the showroom. Incredible cars from the past in mint condition. In the shop laying around, they have a number of Gullwing frames having complete nut and bolt restorations. Bodies in the paint booth, engines in the engine shop. The whole facility is like an operating room. Spotless, methodical and organized.

    Good luck with your search...
