Has anyone looked at the cars below? The more I look at cars online and then look at them in person the more nervous I get on being able to judge them online. They often show much more flaws in person...

    1. 86 328 (Euro) Red / Tan
    Boston area (N. Andover)
    24K Miles
E Bay item 250440717580. Bidding just closed...

    2. 89 328 Red / Tan
San Fran, CA area (Benicia, CA)
    37K Miles

Hopefully it's ok to ask these questions.. I'm new here...
Looking for a good car but might not have the budget for a flawless 10Kmile car...

    Hi BNSC,

I haven't looked at either but can give you some advice. First, photos hide a lot! I personally looked at almost two dozen cars before I bought mine. I am still amazed at the flaws that can be hidden in pictures. Second, set a budget. You should be able to get a lightly-used, well-serviced 328 for $45,000-50,000. Knowing what you want to do with the car will help you figure out the budget. Are you going to be driving it or showing it? Show cars sell for a bit of a premium. Third, fill out your profile! Post in the appropriate regional section and see if there is a good, local independant you can talk to before you buy a car. You'll want a relationship with a mechanic. Finally, study hard on FChat.

    Hi BNSC,

I've look at the Benicia car a while back. The issues that stood out where the front hood and passenger side door. The mounting plate for the hood strut was ripped of the hood and "reattached" using rivets. The passenger door was not well aligned. The window has been eating in the seal and there was what looked like overspray on the rocker panel. You need to make up your own mind what the latter might mean.

Disclaimer I am in no way an expert with these cars.

you mentioned about a 10k mile flawless car,be careful, anything with that low miles has not been on the road enough to be sorted out and may need lots of hidden things that need attention, but if you have money for a low mileage car make sure you have money for that unexpected thing that'll pop up becuase it will.

If you had a tired, overdue-for-service Ferrari to sell, would you put it on eBay for a sight-unseen sale to a newbie or consign it to a Ferrari or highline dealer where it could be inspected and gone over prior to purchase?

There are no guarantees, but I would advise starting your hunt at reputable dealers, Ferrari Market Letter or FCA/FOC. I get emails every week about FOC owners' cars coming up for sale, and it's a pretty small community where the sellers are well known.

Good luck. 328s are great cars.

That's probably some pretty solid advice above. However, I've had very good luck with finding a really great ferrari or two on ebay, and, for very attractive pricing. The 308 I bought off ebay some months back for a very low price ($20,000) has turned out to be a wonderfully solid 308 - much, much better than your average 308/328 for sale. The car is easily the calibre you see at a high end showroom (and probably better!) and it would have likely cost me $30,000-$35,000 for the car if I had bought through that route. That's $10,000-$15,000 I saved.

And, I didn't have to go through the often typical, and unpleasant, experience of haggling over price, wasting a whole afternoon while the "you know, I really like you.....let me see what I can do with The Boss - I'm doing everything I possibly can for you!" BS plays out. That's the most unenjoyable part of the process. Not all comercial sellers/brokers are like that, but many are!

I like to use this tactic (it's somewhat entertaining) - I make a verbal offer to the floor sales guy (I refuse to fill out "offer" paper work). Then when he's in the back "talking with The Man" I simply walk out and head towards my car. I guarantee the guy isn't talking to The Man, rather, he's trying to overhear what you're saying in the sales office, or he's taking a smoke break or he's blabbing with his GF on the cell. You watch, before you get anywhere near your car the guy comes scurrying out and already you're starting to gain some leverage in the negotiation.

Buy what you want, buy where you want to buy. Just make sure you know what you are getting and pay appropriately. I have nothing against Ebay cars... It is just another channel. Sometimes, you can buy a car in your area and inspect it before a final bid on ebay.

If your're interested in a car don't forget to run a CARFAX check, you'd be surprised what you find. For instance the Boston Euro 328 was in a Front End Crash with a TRAIN according to CARFAX. : 0

When I began my hunt for a 308 I started out looking on Ebay. That was what I figured offered me the best chance to enter Ferrari ownership. Cheaper cars, but as you pointed out a bit shaky on what the car is really like.

Then I stumbled upon Motorcars-International in Springfield, Missouri and had a very pleasant email exchange with Randy McCall (NoPiston on F-chat) there. They had a car that fit right into my price range, could to the major in-house (so that gave me HUGE peace of mind), and were a high-end dealership. I could NOT be more happy with them at this point. Everything is being taken care of as we speak. I get photos daily telling the progress they are making. I would definitely feel comfortable with them buying a car sight unseen at this point or recommending them to anyone else.

I know there are other dealers out there who provide similar services, but this is NOT something you would find on an Ebay car.
