1. If you want to go into racing don't start with a Ferrari. Learn with a Spec Miata or anything of that nature that is slow and has a huge competiton class. SM we run upwards of 50 cars wheel to wheel and when someone rubs you the damage is not in the thousands but can be fixed for $8 bondo and 99c spray can. Not as flashy but your best bet to learn how to drive. 2. 348 Challenge are slower than the 355CH. No question. Not by that much though. If you get a good price on a 348CH you will be able to have lots of fun at club events. Any competitive racing will be precluded because you will not be competitive and who wants to make an arse out of himself at the track witha car that is way too slow. 355CH is a great way for several already stated reasons. My main reason, it does not need a computer to fix it. 360Ch is a beast. Love the car for handling and power output. Downside, it needs an SD2 for prettymuch everything. Your dealer/mechanic will become your best friend. You adopted his children since you are paying for their college. 3. The reason why there is no real Challenge class outside of Ferrari is simply because you cannot get people who own these cars to come to any event that is not a show-off Ferrari event. If there are any other cars coming....they are not interested. Most people use them only for FCA event and those that go to some track days like Ira are a rare example of true drivers who want to drive instead of running around all day in a red drivig suit with the FCA patch. I won the NASA Championship in FL last year with my 355Challenge and had a great time. This year I switched entirely to Spec Miata because I was running SCCA and NASA full season (stopped running SCCA mid season, too far behind in points). While the 355 has power, the SM is a blast to drive. My experience level has greatly increased with driving this low powered car. It will allow you to drive your high powered car much faster. Here is my last year car with the new paint. It is for sale BTW if you are interested. Not familiar with the car listed on ebay, but the low price and dubious paint match on the right side prompts me to remind you to put any prospects up in the air to check the tub- virtually every Challenge car has been wrecked, many repeatedly and hard, so it'd be nice to know what you're getting into. In addition of course, you'd be crazy not to have a thorough PPI including compression and leak-down tests. Also, read Martin's advice carefully (he's Cavallino Motors/ITC Racing)- as I noted in Post #9, he knows what he's talking about when it comes to running Challenge cars (well, except for the part about my being a "true driver)!
Great information guys! I am going to use my 355 just for fun. I am not a race car driver. I just have fun with it. I can take it to the national events and drive around the track. The 355 is prefect track car to enjoy.
