I just finished a book called the driver the other day, written by a multiple time gumball participant/winner alex roy. In the book he chronicles his experiences during the gumball rallies as well as his attempt at breaking the record from New York to LA by car in the shortest amount of time (cannonball style) in his 2000 BMW M5. It was an awesome book, I recommend it to any f-chatters and gumball rally fans. Has anyone else read it?

I got this book for Christmas and was somewhat surprised how much I enjoyed it. I still think the guy with the Ferrari 575 that set a record after a bet on the start of last years BullRun has more of my respect. Alex spent so much time planning with Garmin maps, large gas tanks, had an airplane during daylight hours fly ahead to scan for cops, fancy toys for driving at night etc. the Ferrari guy was 45 minutes(from memory) or so slower and just did last minute, then joined the Bullrunners for the end of the rally back on the East Coast.

Santa Claus also brought me "On the Edge" by Richard Hammond and I read that book in one sitting.(I usually read 6 books a year) It's fantastic! Even your wife will love it!

Hmm, I've heard of this book lately. I guess if a book is deserving of its own thread on this forum then it might be worth a read!

Actually someone picked up the book(gift) for me while in the UK in December 2007, from what he said it was quite the talk then and there. I;m sure you can find a copy on Amazon or ebay, perhaps even Chapters/Indigo.

As for the Alex Roy "pretender etc" comment, I have never met the guy, so I can't speak from experience. But the feeling I get after reading the book and plenty of his posts at m5boards is he's a car guy. Can't hold him back for that, he went for a goal and made it happen. Seen some of his videos and he can be very funny also (Pulling over the Gallardo owner on the Gumball), it would be hard to take his laugh for a 31 hour drive but I have a feeling it would have been a blast to join him on many rallies.

    nice...hope you enjoy it.

and yes, i think even alex would admit that you have to be an idiot to drive across the country in that rediculous amount of time....and he does seem to love attention...but i wouldnt say he's a pretender.
