I used to do this when I travelled here and there with my iPad. Worked fine, but ate up data.

Not off an Iphone, but I do run an Ipad off of an android phone and it works well. It is not my primary connection, but works well enough out in the "wild". Not quite as fast as a cable wifi connection, but certainly usable.

I do exactly that and have had no problems.

As noted above, eats up your data quickly if you are viewing videos, photos, etc.

Cool.. on my iphone I have unlimited grandfathered in, so data is not a concern..I am thinking of closing my ipad account which is on a limited data plan, and they charge steeply if you run over the limit!
    Thanks

I have the exact same situation with ATT unlimited data plan. So if I understand correctly I can set up a wifi hotspot off of my iPhone and get unlimited service on my iPad when there is no wifi?

    Sort of:

Your Ipad needs to be in the vicinity of the Iphone.

On your Iphone go into "settings" and turn your "personal hotspot" on. A Wi-Fi password will be shown.

On your Ipad look for a wifi connection like always. If the your Iphone is close enough it will show up on your Ipad as an available wifi connection. Connect to your Iphones wifi with the Ipad using the password that was giving to you on your Iphone.

I assume I have to enable the service on my phone first?

By service, you mean a data plan? Yes you have to have data plan on the phone.

As usual, not quite as simple as it first appears.....

I 'treasured' my grandfathered in unlimited data plan at $30 / month. Didn't use it much, but seemed to make sense. Unfortunately, you can't have the hotspot on that plan! :(

    Total bill was running ~$110 - 130 a month.

Just switched to the baby plan (2GB data) that allows the hotspot, and the bill drops to ~$70 / month.

I'm generally in wifi range, but for 'emergencies' I'll see how it goes - if needed, 10GB / month would bring the bill back to roughly what it was before.....

Guess I'm about to find out.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

Really? ATT unlimited data doesn't work with hotspot?

    Correct. :(

If you try and enable it as described above it'll tell you to call 611, visit the www site or something else I don't recall.

I contacted them via text chat to see what was what, and the *very* helpful dude confirmed. He also confirmed my bill would come down (at least on the 'baby' plan), so given I won't use it much, I switched over.

He guided me thru how to do it in the www site. Then reboot the phone, then enable it. I tested it, and is now working a treat.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I use this method all the time in hotels with a ridiculous WiFi charge. I have 11G of data and if I'm careful I don't come anywhere near that.
