I'll likely be staying in Europe for a few months next year and I'm wondering if I should ship my 458 over for that time.

I would basically leave the car registered and insured in the US, ship it over for a few months and bring it back. If this whole thing would cost me a couple of grand it may (or absolutely may not depending on the hassle) be well worth it to have the car there for the whole summer.

I think tourists are temporarily exempt from VAT as long as the car does not stay more than 6 months and is used for tourism purposes. Being a EU citizen might change that status but I'll find out.

    Has anyone done this before?

Considering the rental prices for the summer and the joy of having the own car in another continent I would say do it!!!

Many owners do that when they participate f.i. in the Mille Miglia ... or Goodwood ...

Buy one and then sell it when you're done, taking a slight hit.

    Hi Ron,

When you have a moment, would you please provide some details on the process? The paperwork involved, the cost, the maximum amount of time you can keep it over, etc etc?

    Really appreciate it, thanks!

Shipping is relatively easy. I used DSV and they shipped by container New York to Livorno. Transit time is roughly 2 weeks - not counting loading and unloading. Cost for me was roughly $20k round trip but that included Arizona.

For Italy, all cars shipped from the U.S. need a Carnet. A Carnet is like a passport for the car and costs roughly $3,000. It is mandatory and is issued as a bond so you don't sell your car there. DSV shipping handled that for me.

Also there is insurance. You need both Liability and comprehensive and collision. Hagerty provided the comp and collision but refused to insure liability because of the Mille Miglia. I used a broker in Bologna called Broker Studio Group. I had to pick up the papers in person prior to driving and it cost $300 for one month. My contact there is Marcello Pagani and his email is [email protected]

My guess is that you'd lose quite a bit less than that for a month's driving if you bought and sold.

I wonder if the clock resets if you drive the car into Switzerland and maybe keep it there overnight.

Thanks Ron!! What an awesome experience. Once-in-a-lifetime and certainly worth it to do it in your own car.

Thanks Ron for the feedback. Must have been awesome experience to drive around your own Speciale during the MM!

I would bring the car over for anything between 3-5 months and I do think it could make financial sense. Both ways cause their own hassle. Flipping a 458 in Europe seems inherently more risky. In that case I would rent maybe as long term rentals become much cheaper and 20-30k will probably get you a 458 for the summer minus the hassle.

@galt - I doubt it. It's like tourists trying to reset the clock for US tourist visa, Mexico and Canada don't count!

I was told you can even use Ro-ro services on commercial car ferries, which mostly transport new cars. Such as Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

Global Logistics Company - WWL Private Vehicle Shipping

I wouldn't mind dropping off the car myself and picking it up in Holland/Germany wherever it arrives.
