Anyone ever use the Traqmate laptimer system?

I'm considering buying one of these, but would be interested to hear somebody's opinion on it.

I use it on my ex-Grand Am Cup race car. It's a decent system for the money (approx. $900.00) but it has limitations if you are used to something like a PI or Motec system.

It's very easy to install and has many of the basic functions of the more expensive models. They recently added more functions and the system now has video overlay capability.

Some people don't like the fact that it doesn't use flash cards to store the data (it can store 10 hours at a time) but that doesn't really bother me since I download every session on a lap top.

My only real complaint is that it's hard to read the backlit lcd display in the car and it's too small. The GX2 display is much bigger and brighter.

The Traqmate, the DL1 and the Racepak G2X are the three best under $1K systems out there. For PNP ease and good GUI, the Traqmate is hard to beat, probably the simplest and requires the least ramp-up to get usable information.

The G2X is a step up, plus has a good integrated dash. The DL1 is most advanced and is the most expandable, but also the most difficult to set up the analysis program, although their recent V6 upgrade of their software is much better. I use all these for coaching purposes and they all are tremendously valuable for that purpose. I think they all have online demos that are good to become familiar with before you pull the trigger.

For track days, any of these are fine. For engineering the car, you might want something more involved...

I used one at Sebring a week ago for a track day. It worked very well with one major caveat. Without the video option it is tough to tell if you were easing up for traffic in any particular section. Make it impossible to compare data to see which line is better. For track days you need video to go with it.

As a simple toy to show maximum G's, speed, best laps, etc. it is perfect.

Excellent and agree fully. Debated going GPS system but tin the end without video overlay it makes it tough to KNOW what exactly may be happening. Perhaps next year i can afford a proper system with video and all. For now i feel the $$$ is best spent on track days/driver ed sessions.

I used my Traqmate for the fist time at VIR a couple of weeks ago. I was really pleased with the quality of the data and the software. I certainly had enough information to generate "analysis paralysis". I haven't used any of the other GPS based data loggers, but I am completely satisfied with this one track days.
I spent hours analysing my date the week after the event and learned quite a bit about my performance. My only wish for a future upgrade would be for a numerical readout for the G loadings at any point chosen on the track. I'm sure this will arrive in future software upgrades as they seem to be very attentive to their product.
The fact that there is no removeable card or drive is a minor issue b/c the display just removes quickly and is pluged into the USB port on your computer.

The latest version will record RPM information if you have a suitable sending unit. RPM would be a nice bit of information to have for analysing lap performance.

My best advice is to download the software of all of the units and purchase the one with the software package that you are most comfortable with.
