I occasionally ask this question because I would like the SD light on my 328 to function as designed and because there are occasional claims on this site that someone is going to reverse engineer the module and make them available. Anything re that?

I removed the Cat/installed a straight pipe shortly after buying the car when the SD light began randomly illuminating. It continued to do so even with the thermocouple wire-tied to the frame - essentially out in the air. The light does not illuminate when the ignition switch is turned on, only randomly when it feels the need!

I would prefer to have the Cat installed but I won't run it without the SD light functioning as it is supposed to.

How should it work? Since I do not have one on my 328.

Anyway, I do have a small design that fits into a "standard" relay. It is a simple thing to create a high/low beam switch and flashing for vehicles which do not have it integrated.

Since it is using a micro, it could be modified, maybe.

AFAIK, all 3x8s equipped with catalytic converters had "slow down" lights which illuminated if the cat overheated. There was a specific parameter as far as what Cat temp the light would begin flashing and at what temp the light would stay illuminated. I don't recall the specific temps but the info is in the owners manual. The light also is supposed to illuminate for a few seconds when the ignition is turned on to verify it is working properly.

As I said, mine worked correctly in my '89 328 when I purchased it in '08 but it started acting up shortly afterward and I removed the Cat since I could not rely on the warning system.

I would love to see the whole system redesigned using readily available thermocouples with the modules in the trunk.

Ok, this reminds me of a 1wire system I designed to measure temperature in various locations in the engine bay, trunk, interior ... it used a pic16f84, I think. The sensors were digital output devices and looks like old school transistors in to92 package.
