What's the best place to look? I'm trying to stay under $2500/mth, studio is fine. Will having a small dog (5 lbs or so) be an issue at most places?

I may be moving there in a few weeks, but not 100% sure yet.

What other things do I need to look out for or be aware of?

For a studio at 2500 a month, you should find some very nice places. Upper east side is always nice, as well as some new developments in midtown. Having a pet will impact the number of listings you find, but try listings that say "cats OK" if the dog is as small as you are saying it will be. Make sure you know the monthly maintenance fee it it's a co-op, this may impact the total budget of homes you are searching for. I'd also suggest going to talk to a realtor: most of the hot places in manhattan never make it online.
