aperitif/apertivo

Beer doesn't count.

More along the lines of Campari, Cinzano, Lillet... lawdy knows, aperitifs do good biz in Europe and make nice ad backdrops in various races, but does anybody here have favorites?

 

I'm not a huge fan of aperitifs, I guess grappa in Italy would be my favorite. Had Lillet and Campari a few times and they just don't "work" for me. Digestifs, on the other hand, I am a huge fan.

 

I've been drinking St. Germain. We are getting along great.

 

i like suze'.

 

I enjoy Campari. Grappa too strong.

 

My wife just returned from Europe with a newly aquired taste for Aperol, served as a gespritz with either white wine and a bit of bubble water or prosecco.
The jury is still out here.
Best aperitif I know of is a proper gin martini.

 

One of my favorite digestifs is Cynar.

Chee-NAR...it's Italian and made from 13 herbs and plants, among them artichokes, believe it or not.

You can drink it as an apertif, but it really works well to settle your stomach after a big meal. It's bitter and really gets those stomach juices going. I like the taste..give it a try!

 

I like champagne-based (or just champagne itself) drinks prior to dinner.

 

This is what I hoped to see - different tastes abound.

If you can, describe these tastes or flavors - by way of comparison, perhaps - and maybe a recipe or two.

 

Ouzo is quite good. You see alot of people drinking it though.

Ouzo tasts much like a black licorice. If you do not like Jagermeister for instance, than I would pass. The alcohol taste is very masked though.
