Have asked myself how M fits in with other car in its segment, car like the 911 and M6. I am not talking about purely dynamic qualities either, I am more looking at the sense of history, sure very few people buy a car for history but to some people it does matter.

I mean here we have the BMW M6, its built on the mass production platform of the basic 6 series, sure it has a V10 with a computer tuned exhaust note but there is no sense of history, sure the 6 series dates back the 80's but it was just that an 80's car, no real pedigree...

The 911 on the other hand has heritage, has a colourful motorsport history but somehow when you get into a new 997 the magic of the 993 is lost the ecentricity, the sheer feeling of specialness. Sure the 997 is a great car but there is just something lacking, its almost too good at everything.

Many might not agree with my now, but when you get into a M be in as a passenger or as a driver you know the car isnt perfect but you also know that some of the best things arent clinically perfect. One is also aware of the history, the classic clock being a reminder of past glories.

For me the appeal of M is that they combine character with honesty and dont have the aloofness that some of their competitors suffer with

The appeal of the modern Maserati to me is that for it's a practical exotic I can drive everyday. Does an F355 sound better? Yes. Does a 360 look better? Yes. But an F355 or 360 aren't as practical to daily drive as a 4200, I was suprised when getting into the Maserati market that when I spoke with the majority of my customers the 4200 is normally their everyday car and sometimes the only car they own. I've yet to meet someone that daily drives a 360 or F355 and does not own another car, that should tell you something about the practicality.

But, to buy a BMW M car could be getting in on the ground floor of it's "history"...like the the person who bought a Maserati road car in 1958 or a Porsche 911 in 1965...I did see a lot of Maserati coupes at the Petit LeMans this weekend, and they are some good looking cars...

Actually it dates back to the 70's ;)

Current Maseratis trade on a history they have no real part of or connection with following the Ferrari take over, the historic cars used Maserati motors not bought in motors from Ferrari.

Ultimatley their appeal is simply that they aren't a 911 or BMW, and they've filled that niche well with a pretty & practical car with styling ques pointing back to the older cars
