Im thinking about specifying Apple Car Play in my 488 spider order. Is it worth having? It wasn't an option for my coupe order. Is the functionality decent with the smaller screen and rotary knob? FYI I don't have it on my other cars so maybe I need a lesson in how good Car Play is in general first.

I have it in my 2016 VW GTI and love it. No downside and it works well.

Yes, but in your VW you're having a touchscreen - which is not the case in the 488. Don't think it will be that useful...

I rarely touch the screen. I use voice (Siri) primarily. I don't know how the integration into the 488 is and it may not be ideal for any one individual. But I find if you use maps or music or Spotify or iMessage (and one day Waze) it is super useful (with or without a touch screen).

It was The Mayor that convinced me not to get it for 488 because it lacked a touch screen

I passed on it. It's 5k and you can stream music without it. The dealer told me it wasn't really worth it.

Yeah I'm leaning towards not getting it after speaking with my sales guy.

I did not get it. Maybe in my daily driver but none of my exotics have ever been about the sound system. I'm not sure how much I ever turned on the stereo in my last car so I spent the money on carbon fiber instead!

I didn't know that it was $5k.. I don't think I would get it either for that price if I was optioning and paying for it on a new car.

If you have an iPhone you can just talk to her without car play.

And you can't talk to her if you don't have cell service...which is fine here around town but get a mile or two away and service is spotty to say the least. Not mountain friendly. ;)

Can someone who has a 488 *without* CarPlay confirm that you can stream music via BlueTooth to the stereo? It drove me nuts that the 458 didn't support BT music streaming. As I spec my 488, I want to make sure streaming will work.

    Thanks in advance!

I'm almost positive it is included when I saw the 488 spider in person. My Speciale and Cali T has/had it but didn't on the 458 spider.

You can connected 2 iPhones in the 488. but only one can be used as cell, the other (or the same) for BT media. If 2 drivers switch often, it's a hassle to connect the right phone every time again.

Be sure that 488 media is ON, otherwise the phone will not use the 488 BT.
I turned it OFF because she (488 voice) was keep on telling me that the speed limit was exceeded grrrr. I need to raise the limit before she notify my again..

To have a decent volume on the 488 media from BT iPhone streaming you need to pump up the volume on your iPhone first.

When pressing the voice button on the back of the steering wheel a bit longer, Siri is activated instead of the 488 voice commands.

I also found a trick to overrule temporarily the alarm system (Belgium) instead of only 2 minutes before the alarm goes off, you can open the car, close the door again for 3 seconds and then you have 'play time' ,the alarm will not count down anymore.

The alarm and the very wide turning cirle (11m) are 2 serious complains. Further I'm ok with the car. 350km now and waiting for better weather .

    488 owner for a few weeks :)

Can confirm it streams via bluetooth without carplay seamlessly. Had mine for over 3 months and no dropouts or failed connections.

We have CarPlay in our FF. While it's expensive as an option (especially compared to it being standard in a VW...), it's awesome and works well. My wife is a huge fan.

The primary use is for Nav (it uploads addresses directly from calendar, texts, et al), text messages and phone. My wife and kids stream music or internet radio, but you could do that with the standard OEM bluetooth.

Can you live with an iPhone (or Android?) device by itself? Absolutely. However, I scare myself by having to look down or fiddle with something while driving. An iPhone in my cupholder is my Infotainment/Nav system in the Abarth. Functional? yes. Convenient? nah. Safe? yeah, really not so much.

Quite honestly, the "standard" Harman VR system is quite good, but Siri is much easier and can do a lot more, so we're finding that we use Siri probably 10x as much as we "touch buttons".

I did an extended drive in a 488 with CarPlay and have ordered it on our next car. It takes about 5 minutes to shift your brain from touching the screen to using the joystick controller. Even then, to reinforce the point, it's simpler and easier to navigate that the OEM interface and Siri works really well. What it really does is reduce the amount of "look down and touch", so for us it's not a big deal that it's joystick vs. touch screen.

Good to hear entropy...I have ordered it on my 488 too, think the touch screen thing is only a small part of it. I don't actually like touch screens anyway, much prefer some form of controller

I work for mercedes, and we just started integrating carplay into our cars as well. Its definitely a really good system that does not require anything more then your voice to function at a high level. I was impressed with how good the recognition was compared to even our own system (which has a 98% success rate). I would suggest anyone who does use their phone while driving be it for media, maps, or nav to spec their car with carplay......but that $5k tag..... SHEESH. MB includes it for free as well now

I had my 488 now for a moth and yes it does streaming BT. I did upgrade to the premium stereo and sounds soooo much better than the premium system in my 458 spider.

The premium sound system and car play are separate options. Around 5k for each.
