I bought two iPod minis when they came out, one for myself and one for a friend, mine broke in 9 months, battery died, had it replaced then it failed again a few months later and I threw it out. My friend's broke after a year, she just threw it out, no repair.

One year and 8 months ago I bought an iBook G4 brand new, it was $1300 or something, so not a high end laptop, but not an insignifigant piece of hardware, and now, 8 months after it's out of warranty it has failed for the second time (first time the power management unit failed under warranty) irrepairably. The logic board died. Anyway, its a write off and despite their software benifits, ease of use and form factor, I'm done with Apple products.

Anyway, reccomend me a new PC laptop, spending around $1500 I suppose, don't care how fast it is, just has to be small/slim/ light and play DVD's.

On the plus side if I get around to it I'll run my iBook over and videotape it.

I like the Lenovo stuff. Thinking about one of those X60's. You can get them starting at around $1400. The one I like would top out at around $2400.

AppleCare is worth its weight in gold.

Thing really is Apples dont break that much. However, when they do, they REALLY break.

Dell XPS M140 here.. Pretty decent for a laptop, not too much $$$.. Mine loaded was under $1200..

As for Apple products, I have a 10 year old Powerbook 140 that still works like a charm, as well as a 3 year old iPod and a new 60 gig black Video iPod that haven't skipped a beat. Sorry you had a bad experience, but 'love is right about Applecare.. Easy repairs, no hassle.. Now Dell.. heh.. that's another story.

Well the iPod minis really were pieces of crap, I read quite a few online forums where people had the same problems, and I have friends who've had similar gripes. The iBook seems to be a bit of a fluke, they are supposed to be reliable. Its possible mine broke because I beat the hell out of it (it was strictly a travelling laptop, used it to watch dvd's mostly), but on the flip side I rarely used it.

I hate reading horror stories like this but I was considering an ibook, not so sure now but every system has it's problems. Only issue with my Nano was last week it somehow reset it self to test mode after I installed a peripheral ipod to car conversion kit, it operates though my stock in dash system from the CD auxiliary port. I still can’t figure out how that happened, everything work fine now. (knocks on wood)

Folks, PLEASE, no matter what you buy, you may end up with a lemon, especially with notebooks, they are like cars, you either get a cherry or a lemon.

I have seen lots of sub-$1,000 notebooks that have plenty of features. I have a Sony VAIO a girl GAVE me - she said it didn't work, was a POS, she didn't want to deal with it.....
So I took it, replaced the 5 year old battery, spent 3 nights wiping the gambling and porn sites off of it that her boyfriend put on, and it's a champ.

Whatever you get, do all you can to get a gig of memory, even if you buy it cheaper from pricewatch.com, and try to get an extra AC adapter.

Ever consider a tablet PC? I have one and absolutely love it; Gateway M275. You really wouldn't guess how many times you would use the handwriting feature in everyday life. It's the only type of laptop I will buy now.

I've got a Toshiba tecra M2.. when i purchased it, i got 1gb of ram, got an 80gb hard drive and extended warranty.. (which has payed for itself) cost something like $200
so far i've had the motherboard die, the screen hinge break off and the toutch pad stop working.. hmm i cant really think what else. With that said it seems to me that all laptops never last. While mine is going magnificently now, i can be assured it will break down again sometime in the future. (and thats where the extended warranty is fantastic)
as for ipods, i've had a 3rd gen 20gb that had to be recharged each day and until it got stolen i accepted that the battery life was ****.. but i've now a new 30gb video and have no problems..

but like whisky said, you either end up with a lemon or a cherry, and it dosnt really matter what brand..

I've never had any problems yet with anything from them. My ipod is a little over a year old and so far no problems. Never had any problems with the mac mini i bought or my new imac either. But that being said hard drives and stuff can fail on anything.

Only problems I've had with my latest Mac (a G4 iMac) were caused by a lightning strike. I got an iPod shuffle a while back and it's worked fine so far, I even put it through the wash one time and it still worked after it dried out.

I'm anxiuosly awaiting the iBook replacement that's supposed to come out any time now, I'll likely order one of those as soon as they hit the market...

The Lemon Rule definitely applies to computers. I've been using Macs since about 1990 and I've never had any real issues (especially like the ones you've described).

I also use PCs because I'm a Web/Graphic Designer so I need to test things on both platforms. Anyway, I got a Dell Inspiron 700m last year and it has been great. "Very small" and "very light" were my only two main requirements since I do all my heavy lifting on my G5 desktop Mac.

Works great in my SUV on long roadtrips with the kids.

Anybody seen the new Apple commercials that started today?

A PC dork wearing a suit and tie acting dorky standing next to an uber-cool Apple guy. The Apple guy says a few condescending lines about how the Dork is enjoying an iPod and how every other apple thing is great.

The undercurrent of course is that Apple is really cool, much cooler than you and me BTW, and PC people are hopeless corporate clones.

    Makes me want to puke.

Never had a Mac or Ipod fail......

I've had them hiccup, but that's about it. As someone said, apple care is a good idea.

Dell makes good XP machines. I have four in my house with no problems until recently.

My Dell XPS laptop had a 1 pixel vert. line running up close to the center of the screen. They had someone out to fix it the next day. When it couldn't be fixed they sent me a replacement computer that is a bit better then the one I purchased. I have a four year ext. warranty. ... Worth it.

apple laptop technology has always been quite lame. many years behind the curve. i am to this date stupified that they haven't been able to do portable computers right. part of their problem is that they support so few drivers that their parts bin is exceptionally constrained.

i've thought about switching, but i like my small, light, powerful laptops (ibn/lenovo, sony vaio).

i've had my ipod mini for years - never had a problem with it.

With laptops warranties are a very good idea because even if the machine holds up there is a good chance someone (or you) will do damage to it.

Apple's in my opinion aren't that great looking and they are certainly not that great in terms of hardware/power and they are overpriced. Also I find their marketing to be complete crap considering apple's are unmodified at all, you can't build/customize a mac like you can a pc. They are closed up identical machines, apple is a cult and jobs is the leader, I'm waiting for the mass suicide. :p

As for the software I recently attended a thomas dolby concert here in boise (great show overall) he was using an apple laptop and the damn thing crashed at least 5 times!

The only reason OSX doesn't have the security issues is because not nearly as many hackers care to bother with something so few people use. However more attacks will be forthcoming thanks to the intel switch and the use of xp on the new macs.

Jobs is just as power hungry and selfish as gates if not more so (gates donates more way more)
