Hey, The "rumors" are reaching "fever pitch".... The black turtlenecks are being pressed. Current best guess is it's going to be a "huge" iPhone - 7"-10" touch screen - Something like this: Price? Between $700 & $1000. We'll see soon.... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I expect Jobs to pull a rabbit out of his hat and surprise everyone. If the iSlate ends up being nothing more than a glorified iPhone with a bigger screen, most people will be tremendously disappointed.
EPIC!! Looks amazing as everything does from Apple, it's expensive as always from Apple. Looks like it's half on an archos and half ipod touch.
I think unless its running full OSX it won't sell, well maybe but just because its Apple. Anything larger than the iPhone with the same OS is just going to be a huge pain, why would you want to carry that around? If it runs OSX then maybe, but I think its going to have too many pitfalls for someone to give up a laptop for.
Hopefully..... That was my initial reaction. But, thinking a little more on it, the "major" criticisms of the iphone were: - Screen too small - Virtual keyboard too small and no "feedback" - One of the reports said this thing'll have it. It'll also have Bluetooth (blueteeth?) so can support a "real" keyboard and mouse for use when "docked". - Horsepower - This should have enough space (and cooling via the case) that won't be an issue. I dunno - They've come a *long* way with the multi-touch gesture stuff - Maybe all you need to interect with it? What else do we need?..... Cheers, Ian
I reckon it'll have a "full" version of OSX on it. I've already stopped carrying my laptop all the time - Can do most of what I want on the phone. This would seem to fill the gap nicely (?) - you're not gonna use it for S/W development after all. Will it be "locked" to itunes? I do hope not! [And I like itunes ]
People may complain that the iPhone screen is too small, but I suspect that they don't really want to carry around anything larger. Some people will, but not enough to make the iSlate a success if there's nothing else to draw them in. Steve Jobs' greatest strength is figuring out what people "need" before they know. For that reason, I suspect that the predictions about the iSlate will miss the mark. Look back at predictions for the first iPhone. People used the iPod as a reference and assumed that the iPhone would essentially become an iPod that made phone calls. We all know that the iPhone was much more than that. In much the same way, people assume that the iSlate will be an upgraded iPhone. Apple's track record suggests that the iSlate will be much more than that. Just my $0.02.
Anyone played with a modbook? That's what apple has to beat, IMO. People might just use it for things you can do on an iphone, but they will spend money on it and buy it only if it can enable them to visualize doing things like drawing, editing, etc. with it. If it's just an iphone with a bigger screen, very few will spend the money to get something that does exactly what their iphone does, albeit on a bigger screen (which also makes it a pain to lug around).
Same here. I suspect this is aimed at the home user. As mentioned above, I rarely drag my laptop with me, even around the house...I use my iphone instead. I would LOVE to have a a larger screen, but still vastly more portable for around the house than a laptop. I see this thing as a winner....if they can keep it under $1000 I think I'll be a customer.
You nailed it. I have my laptop hooked up in my home office to two 22" monitors (wow that's a mouthful haha) and it's a royal PITA to have to unplug everything when I want to use my laptop on the couch or in bed. This device would be perfect.
I don't really see the appeal unless Apple can make it less than $400 and compete with netbooks, already its primary purpose will be entertainment, I don't mind the iPhone keyboard but would never want to write a paper on it, even if its a larger scale. It will be like everyone said to sit on your couch and surf the web, watch a movie etc etc. And I just dont see many people dropping over $500 on something for that purpose. Now I just thought of something that I wouldn't mind having it do, books. The iTunes store has already incorporated pretty much every media possible, why not add a kindle-like application and sell books. Make it under $400 and maybe I'd be swayed.
Again, rumors have it that this is one of the features. Definitely wont be under $400 though. I mean, think about it, the 64gb iPod Touch is $399 so...
If you use your iphone to surf the web while on the go, why would you spend more and get something that's more awkward to lug around to do exactly the same thing. That's why I say it has to have the horsepower to do more. Editing, drawing, etc., as well as the chat/video chat, surf, etc. Why wouldn't you write papers on it if it had a good writing recognition program or decently usable keyboard, as well as the ability to connect with sleek usb or bluetooth keyboards. That reminds me, it needs to have a nice handle that can double as a stand to prop it up at any desired angle.
I've always thought this was more for business-oriented people. People who could use this for presentations, small meetings, or use it to surf/watch movies while in the train or plane...
How many people are going to pay $700-$1000 just so they don't have to unplug their laptop? Not nearly enough to make the iSlate a success. Apple has to bring more to the table than a device that is slightly more portable laptop.
I won't be buying it but I'm still very excited to see it. As said above, if it's not running OS X, they're not going to sell. Now if it had 3G and I could just throw my SIM card into it... then we're talking.
Probably wise to wait until the device is released before making that statement. I'm not waving the Apple pom poms, but history tells me that you'll be eating those words...
To be clear, I'm not suggesting that the iSlate will flop at this point. I'm merely saying that I expect it to be a lot more than a super-sized iPhone.
You'd get a second phone plan for this? I don't think many people would. Or are you saying you would replace your iphone/other mobile phone with this? I don't think many people would do that either.
I honestly think it will do pretty well. I believe it to be a kindle alternative that can do much more (some easy apps, games, video, music). I personally don't really want or need it - I have PC's/Laptops in nearly every room - so I am covered. If you look at it as a Kindle on Steroids - I think that is what they are going after. I really liked the Microsoft book tablet I saw videos of on the web - not coming out for a while. That was some awesome technology. Think of it as a franklin planner on steriods that will do Multimedia, musics, ebooks, etc. But with more of the personal/professional organization slant.
Whats this iphone talk? It isn't a phone, it says ipod in the top left hand corner and there is no phone or text message app on the main screen. It's a big ipod touch end off.
