I recently fell in love with a wicked cool brand new Apple computer and other then not knowing how to use it, i really wanted one. So it got me thinking, what are the Pros and Cons of Apples, and what would you go for? Apple or PC? Thanks for any tips

apples tend to look better but are more expensive.

pcs have more softwere for them...but that includes viruses!

if you can use windows then macOS will seem easy as pie..

    hmm..thats about it really

Apple makes nice machines, but there isn't a lot of value in the hardware. Some would say the value is in the security of the OS itself, but I have seen some pretty nicely made root kits that are making the rounds that would make XP seem like Fort Knox.

Small word to the wise: make an OS/X compatible software firewall and combo spyware/virus remover software and market the piss out of it.

Just leave some ports open *wink*.

If I had to guess, I'd say 60% of Mac machines are drones or have a decent root kit on them, and they have no way of seeing them.

Yea i have a comment to make about apple. Its the ipod, when i buy one (i have 4 in the family) and want to use it on my WindowsXP. It has to be re configured for the PC, becourse it is not an Apple unit. This is a pain in the back side and i have thrown atleast 2 new ipods..... Why cant it just be simple instead of apple makeing it so hard.

Are you buying a computer and expecting it to go up in value? Hell no, you expect to use it for somewhere between eighteen months / three years and then get another, knowing that your old machine will only be good as a door stop by then. Well, not quite, but you know what I mean. With this in mind the drop in value, once bought, is no concern. What is of interest is how well the machine will function and how much enjoyment you will get out of using it.
So, how well will your Apple /P.C. function? That depends on what you will use it for. If it is just every day stuff, such as writing letters, a spot of accounting and looking at this site on the internet, well then both machines will work pretty well.
File sharing? Then stick to the sort of machines you coworkers use.
I’m an Apple man, but then I don’t file share. I’m also not a computer guy - Just a user who hates being forced into technical talk. I believe that computers are like plumbing - If one must know exactly how the boiler works and where all the pipes are before having a shower then the system is badly built. Plug and play is the only way to keep the average consumer (me) happy, and that’s more Apple than P.C.

    1. I've found that the Apple support is very good. I haven't needed it much, but when I did, it was great. Whenever I deal with PCs and MSFT, they always seem to nickel and dime me.

    2. Apple's "world" of products are much better integrated, IMO. By this, I mean that the software, hardware and peripherals do what they were meant to do with a minimum of tinkering. I've had problems keeping my PC working. Periodically, for no apparent reason, the PC environment alters itself for no reason (many of MSFT's update downloads can change configurations without your approval, I believe). I then spend about a half a day on phone calls with 1, 2, 3 or more vendors. Everyone points to the next guy. It's a circular chase. The Apple OS and platform are much more stable.

    3. Cost of acquisition (not just for the computer and software, but also possible for peripherals) is higher for the Apple. But, I've yet to lose one file (knock on wood) or any data. My Toshiba laptop is a POS. I've had numerous hard drive failures on it and replaced the hard drive at least 3 times. Pure garbage. They have the same duties and get the same treatment, but the Toshiba (again, IMO) is useless.

    4. Viruses. Previously mentioned, but virus writers are beginning to focus on Apples more and more. As a Unix-based OS, OS X does have some weaknesses. Heretofore, virus writers have been going for the low-hanging MSFT fruit.

I "went" Apple with a G4 Powerbook about 18 months ago, and I am supremely pleased. However, I still need the basic software packages like MSFT's Office for Mac. Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Outlook (the Mac version is Entourage) are industry standards for me (financial). Without these packages, I simply would be beholden to the PC world. Period.

    Something to consider...........

Apple OS does crash. I've experienced this more over recent years. While XP is now very stable, OS X can cause headaches if you can't find the problem.

CHAA, I thought that was the case with old Ipods. I Thought the new ones were interchangable. But, I called Apple and you are correct. You need to choose.

i like Apples, they are great looking. This one apple computer is nothing but the monitor and the whole computer is in the stand thing. Its kind of neat.

If you end up buying a PC, go get a dell. They have some smoking deals sometimes during the year. Back to school, christmas, and all that. I have never had a problem with my dell computer. Its a great machine.

I've been a professional graphic artist now for 25 years & started w/ an IBM PC because that was the University of Georgia issue for research & education departments. I started w/ CorelDraw ver 2. Only Apples/Mac had Adobe products. Back then that was the big difference. I now use CD & Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop interchangeably on a top-end PC. What do you want to use the computer for?

you don't need to reinstall the os every 6months

hardware is proprietary, so no generic crap or cutting corners

nio wierd dll bat ini inf versioning conflicts, it just runs the apps no questions asked

    stable os

    better color management

    fast load/shutdown time

better thread management for multi tasking

they actually are very good when it comes to bugs/updates and being current

    excellent tcp/ip and network ability

for daily use, i think a PC is much more flexible. now, I do quite a bit of audio recording and production and i think a Mac is the only choice in that area. Having used both i'd say you still can't beat the stability of the mac operating system.

I'm not going to get technical about any of this but Windows are much more high maintenance. I've been through at least 10 of them. I can't speak for Apple but my Stepbrother has one and it runs beautifully. To me Apple is the Toyota of computers, extremely reliable with very little maintenance.

The downside is less software works with it and sometimes it's hard to get programs to run on it without having to go out of your way. So if you just want something for regular usage I recommend Apple, but if you're looking for something that needs speciality software and more specific usage that an Apple computer is not capable of installing without using all kinds of odd loopholes then Windows. Again this is just my opinion.

I was a die-hard Apple man for 15 years, and then my G3 at my office became so unreliable and troublesome that I decided to convert my entire office over to PCs. One of the best things I ever did.

I use both. Between business & private, we have 2 desktop PC, 2 desktop Mac, 4 PC laptops, and 2 Mac Laptop. I've been using Mac for 16 years, and PC for about the same.

I tend to use more Mac, as I have much less trouble for OS. Even for business, I've been using same softwares so there's not much problem for available softwares.

It all depends on what do you need it for. If you're just liking Mac for the look, you have a good taste!

Well they look nice... less security issues (this is largely do to its lack of presence in the computing world though) and well they are great for digital video/image type stuff and general stuff. However I find pc's are better in terms of power and performance (games for instance) and I have had no trouble with my dells and xp over the years. No viruses or anything like that (I have antivirus, router and firewall though so..) and of course I keep up to date on other security stuff to. One thing is apple has no registry which is nice whereas windows (including the forthcoming vista) will still have this.
