(meeting codes for the railings (max 4" betw verticals here) makes those sexy freestanding spirals hard to pass inspection....)

 

I loved it.......some very creative thinking.

 

Those definitely had to be done before some of the more recent codes if they are in North America. Though I suppose you can always do whatever you want to a point after final inspection.

 

Very cool! I've never thought of the drawer in the first step of the staircase. Great idea.

The white intertwining stairs hanging just a few inches off the wooden floor are MVRDV design for Sjoerd Didden and Ghislaine van de Kamp's ("Didden village") in Rotterdam. I remembered seeing the article in NYTimes Style magazine a while back.
