Eminently doable or utterly insane given NYC's penchant for potholes, damaged roads and parking / garage slopes?

Have heard of a couple of sightings but keen to get a better sense.

I've heard of one thats kept in the city.
The owner had the car custom raised and inch and half to be able to drive it in the city.

For those interested, I am opening up an exotic car storage in Hackensack, NJ. A place to store your car with battery units, climate controled, etc. You can also detail your car, have it detailed, and even do work on it. Details Soon:)

    Vik,
When I recently bought my 997 C2S, they had a Carrera GT on the floor. Its really low to the ground and the front has a very long over hang. I was with my wife and my wife said "We can't get this car. Can't drive it in the City"! Not that she knows autos, but I would say that shes right. Everytime I see one, it moves up my list as one of my favorites. You need to get the summer residence on Long Island to store the exotics!

speaking to owners I would say insane. A family friend owns one and unfortunately doesn't drive it too often due to scrapping it on roads in bergen county. Probably would have to be kept in NJ or NY state.

but then again, as long as you're not driving around meat packing or 5th ave just to be driving, it would probably be worth the occasional bottom-out jolt?

LOL - I should look into that, but work schedule rarely affords me the liberty of two contiguous days off.

yeah, and the best part. 2 mins off 80 from the GWB:) Plus, its going to be cheap cause I am doing it more for the cars and their owners than to make money.

    Heard that's a one-off and cost ~$30K to do?

    Thats what I heard too.
If you need more details I can speak to Matt about it. I think they sold the car, but not 100% sure.

Dude, for $30k, you could get hydraulics put in the car to raise and lower it whenever you want. Look at the adjustable suspension height on the Lambos - you could do that to whatever car you want if you can find a decent installer.

I know - I was just trying to confirm / highlight the cost of doing something like that on a CGT.

Two weekends ago, I was on the upper east side, visiting my gf. I was driving up 1st Ave, through the tunnel by the UN when some dude in a tricked out lowered Porsche came roaring by me doing Mach 1. He was weaving in and out of traffic, being a total dickhead. Up near 57th St., he pulled out to go around a cab that was cruising for fares and went over a depression that caused his suspension to compress. Unfortunately for him, there was also a metal construction plate right there, and as he went over it, he bottomed on the plate bolts, sparks and a big chunk of something came flying out from underneath. He damn near spun out, and ended up pulled over on the side cursing his brains (what little he had) out. I laughed my a$$ off.

City streets and exotic cars do not do well together. IMHO, if you are going to drive anything other than an SUV in the city, you just have to be very, very careful and leave enough room between you and the cars in front of you to see what's coming and avoid those ubiquitous pot holes and raised manhole covers that are lurking waiting to tear you pretty sportscar to bits. My $.02. YMMV.

I tried driving my 308 in the Meatpacking district once.... Bad, bad idea... Even at 10 mph, it was a disaster. Every brick was like falling off a cliff...

I just saw one today right outside the World Financial Center, towards the end of the West Side Highway (I think? I don't know what the name of the street was), going towards the FDR either that or the Battery Park Tunnel, it looked gorgeous and seemed intact as far as I could tell =P

Prior to my F-car, I *never* drove in the city. But with so many FChatters in the city, they coaxed me in. My 308 has about 4" of clearance & I've only ever bottomed out down by Hubert st going slow over a raised manhole cover (no, I didn't see it in the dark) and once on the FDR during a spirited drive near the bridge. At the Whoop-de-dos that some demented road planner put in.

So I have no reservations driving it in the city....except gridlock.

In fact, we haven't had a group of FChatters buzz Time Square in a long time. I think we are long overdue.

    Lupe? Where are ya buddy?

Last fall I took one of my Jaguar XKE's into the Meatpacking district for a fashion photo shoot for DKNY. We were on Little W.12th St. What a nightmare driving in and out of there! I thought for sure I was leaving my entire exhaust system there, along with most of the underbody of the car... not to mention most of my teeth and my butt. Not doing that again.

WTF?? A G? SERIOUSLY? You just got the RS4, then were in the market for the 355 Fiorano I thought, now you're G-shopping?? Good lord, young man, you sure do know how to have fun. Good luck :D (And call me when you get in the porn business, seeing as how I'm...ahem in "career transition", and you're gonna need some... talent. :D)

Yeah --know the feeling. I actually pulled over about 4 times in the space of that one evening down there because I kept thinking pieces of my car were being left behind. Luckily (miraculously), no actual damage.
