Do you wrench on your 308/328/Mondial?

  1. No, the risk outweighs the rewards. Better to let the trained mechanic repair it.

  2. No, my time is more valuable than the money spent.

  3. Yes, I get satisfaction from doing it myself.

  4. Yes, I pretty much have to do the work to afford the car.

I don't know if there was ever a poll but I wonder if there are any 308 guys who don't work on their cars. By working I mean over and above normal maintenance like all fluid changes or plugs/points type stuff. More like belt changes and carb/FI rebuilds or valve/engine/transaxle rebuilds. Is it just a few of us or is it the majority. Just curious.

I would think a majority of us 308,mondial,328 guys would have to do a bulk of the easy enough mechanical work..if you didn't you would probably get poor pretty quick.Im pretty good with the tools but have to admit that I wouldn't have done alot of the things on my cars without the help and resources of this forum. Thanks to all that have helped and have put their imput in.

I added a poll. I'm not sure these are the choices Steve would have put in, but so be it :D

    You can pick multiple options

Not really the mechanic type, but I do what I can. I would NEVER try to do a belt change by myself though. I just dont trust my own mechanical aptitude at this point.

I needed to be able to pick both of the Yes boxes. I take satisfaction figuring out how to do it with the help of everyone on the site and I have to do it to be able to afford the car.

Its a great source of stress relief and therapy. Or some might think that I need therapy because I work on them...

Although a young poll I laugh at the direction so far. I've done 95% of my wrenching. If the engine blows I can sell the car, but don't have the cash-flow to absorb 10k bills. I'd sell it before a 10k bill at this point in my life, but I do wish to maintain it to a high level. I did the belts fuel lines and coolant lines in the major, think I'm about 5k into parts and while you're in there's. Don't tell my wife :). These are the entry level cars as shown by our need to fix them ourselves. Cheers to us.

The best way for me to turn my 308 from a working piece of art to a piece of art is for me to start doing my own work. I admire those that mechanically inclined, I am just not one of them. I unfortunatly know my own limitations.

For my airplane project I say that if anyone sees me with tools headed for the aircraft the plane is in mortal danger. I don't want to subject Prugna to that danger either.

I do it all myself because it's the only way to ensure it's been done right. I have always done all my own car work, from engine building to re-spraying but initially, with the Ferrari, since the car is not located where I have all my tools/garage, I decided to have a local Ferrari-specialist shop do some work. But out of 3 visits to these Ferrari "experts," 2 of the three visits required me to repair/re-do what they did.

+1, except I have never worked on cars in a major way. After going to 3 local "fcar" mechanics I figured I could screw it up just as good as they did. Patience and tools are the key.

I'm all in favor of working on your car yourself. Just be sure you know what you are doing. Never be afraid to ask someone that knows Ferraris inside and out for help. This can save you a bundle of cash. Just like changing timinig belts. Done right yourself saves you $$$ and gives you a feeling of self satisfaction. Done wrong and you have a mess. Plenty of guys here will help with any questions. If you don't know how, ASK. No shame in not knowing everything. Even the experts had to learn how.

I'm an ok amateur wrencher, but at present have neither the space nor the time.

Norwood Performance is the go-to Ferrari shop here in Dallas and I certainly don't mind paying their price for excellent work and ongoing support.

My bigest daydream is to add a 3-car carage the the back of our house and have a maintenance space for the 308 plus two more cars going...it's just that, a daydream.

I never worked on cars growing up, and a Ferrari is a hellava place to start. My cars go to Cavallo Motorsports for pretty much anything other than cleaning the K & N air filter, pathetic as I am. I would love to have the mechanical acumen of some on this forum and greatly envy them their abilities. But I'm not going to attempt to learn on a Ferrari; I eff up and it's a BIG eff up!

It's just a car -- and much simpler than most modern ones. I've learned a lot not just about the 328 and 308 by working on them, but also about solving car issues in general.

Was under the 328 just a few days ago adjusting the clutch. It was the third time, but I finally believe I got it right.

What he said (except for the part about going to Cavallo Motorsports :) )

On the basis of "a little knowledge is dangerous" and "I don't know what I don't know", this, in my opinion, isn't the car to learn on.

Simple things I could/would do, but anything much more involved than an oil change won't be done by me.

I like to do as much as I can myself, but that's not very much. So far I changed the fuse boxes, replaced an interior switch, replaced the rear bumper, made a fire extinguisher bracket, fixed the hood prop and replaced a window seal. Those are the type of things I can and like to do myself. But as soon as it comes to working on the engine I'll let the expert do the job! Luckily I live nearby the most respected Ferrari mechanic in the country.
