Before anyone goes bashing, please know that I have owned three 3 X8s, including a dry sump GTB. I also understand that Dinos (246s) command a ludicrous price (as I have noted in other threads, that they cost over twice what a carbed 512 Boxer cost is simply absurd, if not stupid, for a whole host of reasons, but I digress...) in the current marketplace, but...some of the ASKING prices I'm seeing for 308s and 328's are, IMHO, bordering on comical. I understand the disparity between asking price and selling price, but...is ANYONE really going to pay 65K for a 30K-mile 308 GTB? A mellow cam 78 or 79? Really? REALLY? These cars were selling for 30K back in the recession, and, in truth, that's about what they're worth; maybe 40-45K for a nice, early-cam GTB (and, of course, more for a glass or dry sump). Some of the dealers out there...their pricing...whatever.

I know they're beautiful cars (especially the Euros), but the performance is so pedestrian (I'm talking everything -- acceleration, braking, handling, etc.)... Anyway...I'm just wondering what the "REAL" marker it at this point.

    My best,

    Scott

Asking prices can be comical because that's all they are - ASKING prices. :)
Lot's of people put cars on the block based on "I'll sell it if I can get X dollars; if I can't, I won't sell it." I have known people whose cars were "for sale" for 10 years….for a price no one cared to pay.

Hot rod features are not related so much to price. Mellow cams don't make a difference. Style/carbs/rarity unique original colors. They are being valued on nostalgia not drivability or reliability or performance. The recent auction prices confirm 40s for solid carved cars.

Drive a 250gto and let me know if it's worth in excess of 50m with a 0-60 time of almost 7 seconds ....let me know if a 57 Testarossa is worth north 20m ...or better still, a split window 67 corvette at 6 figures. None of it makes any sense. Someone I know here has a bandit trans am
And even those are in the 20k range, and I wouldn't give anyone $2 for a pristine 77trans am...but ...it is ...what it is.
You should have kept your 308gtb, you sold to early!

^^What Mike and Big Red said. The value isn't in performance. Is an Isetta or a Messerschmitt worth north of thirty grand? You can't even take those cars on a highway, let alone tour with them unless you want to squashed, yet nice ones command respect when they change hands.

I don't think these escalating 308 prices are absurd as long as there are buyers willing to pay them. Demand for 308s is growing. And that's a good thing, as it makes these cars worth owning and maintaining.

Easy. 3x8's or basically anything is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I didn't buy my QV as an investment, I bought it just for fun. And it is fun.

Why begrudge the 308 its day in the sun? It comes across as sour grapes.

A coupe of weeks ago a Fiat Jolly sold at auction for $99k. A frickin' clown car!

    I still think they're cool, but... c'mon.

Sour grapes? If I coulda make 20K more selling it, big deal; wouldn't have affected, nor does it affect my quality of life, one iota. Begrudge the 308 its day in the sun? That's funny.

I guess I have trouble understanding how you could be so enthusiastic about your euro carb car, but also so negative on current prices.

They're great cars, we all like them, why beat down the prices? No point in trying to pump them up either. I actually agree that the current market is fairly frothy (for 308's and most everything else), but I'm not going to complain about it. Let's just enjoy them for what they are (neat old cars) and let the speculators worry about prices.

In a world where 911T Porsches are now commanding in excess of 65K(and a bog slow 914-6 just sold for nearly 70K!), how can a nice 308 not be on the upswing? I'll grant you that they don't accelerate from a standstill with any particular vigor, but to claim they don't handle or stop isn't true. My GTB handles quite well with modern rubber and it stops much better than most other classics(with proper brake fluid and pads). Their so-called wallet busting services are overblown as well for anyone that shops around(or DIY) a bit.
Nice 308s are beautiful cars with a pretty cool interior-what's not to like, even at 50K?
Lets not compare them to modern iron either, that's just silly. Heck, my modded C6 Z06 will show its tail lights to nearly any modern sportscar-yet I don't see Italia owners rushing to trade for Corvettes.

Not true. They are worth what someone is willing to pay, not what you proclaim the price should be.

Corvairs are up drastically per Haggertys. Had one, well it got me around, sometimes.

A 356 coupe Porsche prices higher (than a 3 x 8) and I wouldn't get excited about its performance, sound or looks. I owned three Porsches, good cars but now that I own a 328 I find a world of difference.

Looks, sound, and feel are hard to match. The 3 x 8's have it all.

I purchased my car in 2012 and didn't blink at the price, I knew I was going to own it, period.

Its all up to the buyer.

Well the camps for this fight are still the same.

So when do we stop arguing about 308 prices and get back to arguing which oil to use?

If performance is what matters, a Porsche 356, Merc 300SL, or even a vintage Ferrari is always going to disappoint compared to stuff that came 20-30 years later. People buy them for other reasons.

I'll bet you $50 that by this time next year you can't count on one hand the number of driver grade 308's that sell for $50,000 and up. I mean "typical" 308's, not the glass or odd ball with 6,000 miles showing. Just your good average 3-4 owner with the usual 30-50k on the odometer. Run of the mill...

    SELLING price, not asking price.
