On my way to work this morning there was a CHP officer standing in front of his car on the 24 onramp @ Happy Valley Rd. (Lafayette), pointing @ and pulling over people w/o front licence plates as they pull onto 24! WTF?

No doubt because of increasing use of laser. I see them with laser units a lot of the time now. Works much better for them if there's a nice license plate target at the front of the vehicle, which they can photograph with the laser speed readout in the same frame.

Unfortunately, I think some times their use isn't fair. Often I see them hanging out in passing areas; you know, the kind where the road goes for miles with only one lane in each direction and perhaps with double yellow lines, and then suddenly there's a 1 mile stretch where there's an additional lane for passing. You find it impossible even to pass an otherwise slow SUV (because they go slow in turns but speed up down those passing areas) without exceeding the limit briefly, and bam! They have you.

I use to have respect for the C.H.P, now I just view them as "Gloried Meter Maids". I saw one today with a car pulled over on 280 by Edgewood Rd. The C.H.P car was green with no light bar.....very stealth....."SCARY"!!!!......Mark

It's not the CHP officers, it's the scumbags we have elected that rule the CHP.

By the uniform & also the San Mateo County Sheriff cars are all white....Traffic at the time was rather slow & I was in the slow lane getting ready to take the next exit,,,,I got a "pretty good look"....I know the Ca C.H.P. also has the white camaros, also with no light bar....What to me is criminal entrapment is the C.H.P's are radaring Looooooong downslopes, very easy to pick up speed on a few mile long downslope....if you are speeding "UP" an incline...you are speeding....picking up speed on a downslope....very easy to do......Mark

I know its a pain, but go to court - it makes it less efficient for them as a source of revenue.
This stuff is getting ridiculous in California

The CHP's here in Monterey County are ridiculous. They have been targetting hwy 68 lately, but only where they can hide succesfully.

You never see them on the 2 lane section where buittheads are going 35-40mph. They target those where the freeway begins going into Salinas when drivers who have been folowing these slow asses, try to get around them to make up for the hour it took to follow them.

It's gotten to the point where you're afraid to drive on the highwsay any more for fear of a ticket.

I though the purpose of the CHP's was to make our highways safe? Not become revenue machines.

You can sure tell what state agencies have money by all the new cars and gadgets the CHP's have these days.

After Pebble Beach I drove up the 101 to SF. The whole trip I had an Escort Radar Detector that would give me a heads up whenever a squad car was nearby. I was by the Redwood City/Santa Clara area cruising in the fast lane when I crested a hill and saw a CHP motorcycle cop sitting on his bike with a laser gun pointed right at me. I've never seen a cop sitting in the fast lane like he was. He didn't even have to turn on his sirens 'cause I knew he got me so I just made my way over to the shoulder. Complete BS. Good hiding spot, I'll give him that.

Yes, I got one in San Francisco a few months ago. I came in time to put some money in the meter and saw a no front plate ticket on the windshield, when I still had 5 minutes left on the meter. Yes, it was $105!

Got one in SF a few years ago. It was $100, but if you fixed it only $10. As I recall, you only get one fixit opportunity. Then you just pay the fine. I think that there are differences among jurisdictions, but I could be wrong.

As far as the front plate ticket is concerned... Go to DMV, tell the clerk you need to fix your no front plate ticket. Of course you bought the car with no front plate, so they'll sell you a new set of plates for $20 or so, and most likely be too lazy to go outside and check that you installed them, gladly signing off on the ticket. A little sweet talk helps. No holes drilled. $30 is better than $105. Happened to me in my 355.

Or you could have a friendly officer buddy.

Or zip-tie your plate on the front for the officer inspection. I used to not run any plates front or back on my cars for 2+ years after purchase until the LE agencies in Cali started this bs.

I once got pulled over 50 ft from my house for dark window tints, looking suspicious I guess. Got the ticket all the same, and took the ticket to 850 Bryant and explained to the clerk I bought it that way and that it would cost $900 to fix. She let me pay the $10 and sent me on my way.

Another time, long ago, I got a no front plate on an old bmw. Took it to 850 Bryant and no cop out front would sign off, because I still didn't have my front plate (young, dumb, and hopeful, I guess). Took it inside to the clerk and she was about to go out the door with me to inspect, but she realized it was drizzling and didn't want to ruin her hair.

I have a lot of unbelievable cop stories, and these are by far the most mundane. Luckily nothing too bad recently, guess I'm getting old.

    Move to Nevada, boys!

I talked to the Nevada DMV last week. They said if the car doesn't come with a front license plate frame, you won't have to pay.

Now, they said "technically" but the wink and a nod seemed to make me think it won't be an issue.

I was never stopped with no front plate on my F430 for over 2 years and my Maserati for 5 years.

Another way to go would be to add a bracket to your bumper and mount your front plate. No real sense in blaming the CHP for doing their jobs, especially when people are spending time offering suggestions on how to best brake the law.

(I'm not saying it's a "good" law, BTW)

Have you ever watched and seen how many cars don't have front plates?

    About 25-35% of them don't.

It's a stupid law to begin with. Just like the seatbelt law.

It started out that they wouldn't pull you over just for not wearing a seatbelt. Then they said only after 3 tickets not wearing it would it cost you.

Now look what it's morphed into. $120.00 tickets for first time violators.

    What a crock of BS
