I got in this discussion with a friend of mine. He is strongly against himself being an organ donor. Not even for religious beliefs, just "because."

I don't see why anyone would care what happens to their organs while they are dead. So much good can come from donating that I see no reason not to.

Anyway, if you answered no, why? Is it that you simply haven't taken the time to sign up? Or do you have some aversion to the idea?

When you get your driver's license in Louisiana they ask you if you would like to be a donor. Smart idea if you ask me. I said 'yes' without hesitation :)

perhaps urban myth but given the money involved and kickbacks for the hospitals/surgeons performing such procedures, i've heard that if you're borderline and you've got 'donor' written on your ID certain unscrupulous types may see greater benefit in providing your bits to others who are willing to pay for them rather than save your life...

take that as you will, spoken out of my arse. but that's what i think of when i see that box to be ticked...

I have the same feelings and at the end of the day I would would like to think they did all they could. In the case I am dead dead, my family knows they have my consent to all but eyes and skin.

No, I'm Jewish. Supposedly you cannot be buried in an orthodox cemetery if you have donated your organs....at least that's what the Rabbi says...

My 21 year old niece has Cystic Fibrosis and has moved to St. Louis with her Mom while they wait for donor lungs. Her breathing capacity is well below 30% and she's on oxygen 24 hours a day at this point.

Unfortunately, sometimes it takes personal matters like this to think about being a donor... or to get involved in fundraising efforts. My wife, two kids and I are walking in the Great Strides fundraising event for CF in a couple of weeks. And if I could give a lung to my niece, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Unfortuantely, it's going to take another family's personal tragedy to help her live for a couple more years.

If you've got your health, don't take it for granted. And give some thought to becoming a donor.

.......plus I donate blood regularly (no we don't get paid in Canada to do it, do you in the States or is that just sperm donor) and am on the Canadian Blood Services bone marrow registry (my best friend died from Lukiemia so I am doing what I can to possibly save a life one day).

I am absolutely an organ donor! I am actually surprised at the number of people that have responded to the poll that are not. I am curious to hear some additional reasons why.

I am a donor. I figure once your dead, it is just a carcass anyway. I know if I needed an organ I would want others to be on the list. It would be a drag to get the knock on the door Monty Python style (from the Meaning of Life).

Contrary to popular belief...Walt Disney was cremated, not cryo. frozen.

No go on the organ donation thing. I have seen bodies that come from gift of life and am not impressed. If they can get their act together so that the funeral directors can preserve them and show them without concern for leaking I would be on board. Mine may not be in the best condition when I go anyhow.

    Are you kiddin'?

    Donor, fer shure.

    Think:

2 people donate their whole bodies to keep my corneas alive,

1 donates his body for the benefit of my liver, that wants a few more years.

2 spend the rest of their days nursing my kidneys,

Several burn victims take my skin out to the pool,

Some smoker drinks coffee and watches TV in an attempt to keep my lungs puffing,

Some scooter-tosser will forever limp with bits of my bone in his hip and pelvis,

A young mother swells my heart with her love,

    And on and on....

No. When I was helping a family member with cancer, I saw a medical journal magazine in his doctor's office that followed the money trail of organ donations. It reinforced why I hadn't signed up to that point.

One medical journal article about a possible money trail was enough to sway you from potentially saving someone's life after your own is over with? Also, was this about donors in the U.S.A.?

If so, if the article were true, wouldn't that lead to a large amount of arrests? Doesn't seem to add up. Oh well.

It was not enough to sway me. As I stated, it reinforced what I already believed. I also already believed that it is not the quantity of life, but the quality.

I must say that the way you wrote your first sentence, too me, is similar to the way special interest groups try and use shame in order to get you to their side. There is nothing shameful about not being an organ donor, about already having made my family aware that I do not want to be an organ donor. Right?

    It was about the U.S..

While unethical, it is not illegal. You can skirt laws by changing from a 'seller' to a broker, etc.. Here is another article for you ( mine was in 1999).

I am not a donor, for two reasons

First, I have seen journals and articles highlighting the "truth" of what sometimes happens when you are a donor. We assume they take our heart and give it to some young child who will otherwise die. It doesn't always go like that and there sure as hell is a lot of profit in it for some folks, its not just a bunch of altruistic philanthropists doing the job.

Second, you want my organs? PAY ME. Why isn't it like reverse insurance? People can become a member of the National Donor Cooperative or something where they get paid an up-front fee of let's say $5,000 in return for signing a donor contract. If they die, the NDC gets ownership of their organs and can sell them to whomever they like (presumably the highest bidder). In the cases where they get the organs of someone valuable, they've made up for other folks who were paid and did not die or could not provide organs.

My late-20-something heart has gotta be worth $100-200k. My almost-no-alcohol-no-medication liver is with a lot of coin. My perfect kidneys are worth their weight in gold! I got lots of goodies, as do others and with a little CASH I'm sure lots of folks could be persuaded to give 'em up in death.

call me misanthropic but i don't like 99% of the population, and walking around the city during the day am reminded just how much most people are put here just to take up space. what it comes down to is some people say "i don't care what happens to my body after i die", well, i don't care what happens to everybody after i die.

if you could stipulate your bits to be used for those you love if needed, then great. until then i don't care if they serve me up at a vietnamese restaurant and turn my skeleton into a wind-chime.
