There's nothing "Heroic" about taking off for a journey for which you are ill equiped....

    And Lindy....

Was Lindbergs accomplishment a much needed step forward in aviation? Yes.
Was it REALLY stupid? Did he almost die (including on departure)? YES.

But, it seems he was well equipped - From the article:

    Sad indeed.

    REALLY?!?!

A micro/ultra light? Over the ocean? That's just a BAD plan all around....We sent two CL215's overseas to turkey and THAT was a big deal.....and CL215's are flying boats...

I understand, and would personally agree, but some people enjoy "pushing the envelope". I think the "heroic" comment was aimed at him (trying) to do it for charity than "personally".

And the English Channel is hardly "an ocean" - Cold, nasty weather etc, but only ~20miles from land.....

At least he was properly equipped for emergencies over water, it's sad it didn't work out.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    A classic epitaph…

Continued VFR in to IFR conditions…

Lots of tombstones with that on it.

Looks like he had a lot of suff, just not an artificial horizon....

The first aircraft to fly the Channel, a Bleriot, qualifies as an ultralight.

RIP. At least they got his body back. Would not have happened if he had gone down in some of the places he intended to fly.
