27.79 a day for natural gas? I'm going to step up and say HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! I got a spare room out here Daniel...
Both. 105 years old. (i.e. no insulation) 6000 sq. ft. Ever seen the movie "The Money Pit"? That's pretty much what we have (minus the financial means of Tom Hanks to fix it back up!)
Daniel it may help to turn the thermostat down from 105 to 68-72 haha That is alot! Our new house is only 1/2 size of your house, but 90 years newer and the bill was just over 150 last month. Gas heating is nice though.
Sounds like you need to go drive the Ferrari more and just move into the garage... that way the engine can keep you warm for a lot less... hehehe. Thats terrible. Ofcourse, I'm watching the weather channel right now and the east coast looks like it is supposed to be getting a lot of warm days for a while... so maybe this month won't be so bad...
J - Let me tell you, it's ******* cold in our house all the time. (Baby's room has electric baseboard heat... so all you nazi's can hang up on your phone call to Child Services) Our digital thermostat settings are: 10pm-4am : 60 degrees 4am-9am: 67 degrees 9am-4pm: 62 degrees 4pm-10pm: 67 degrees
Maybe just use space heaters in the rooms you're actually in? Do you have fire places? I'm sure living in an old house has many perks, but that gas bill is crazy. Hopefully these warm days coming up (70 on thursday I think) will help you out a little.
Sooner or later we might be seeing Daniel out on the corner with a bell ringing asking for donations to pay the Heating bill. Ouch a big dent in the wallet!! With no insulation I can see why its a lot with all that square feet.
My house is <2000 sf, built in 1990. I keep it around 66 when we're home and 58 when gone and at night. Last month's gas bill = $93 Today's gas bill = $220 That's almost enough for an oil change in the 355! Almost. I ditto Mr Pass... "ARRRRGGGG!!!"
My heat is a 53 year old diesel fired, circulating low pressure hot water heat system. 2200 sq ft. in the house plus 1,000 sq.ft of garage floor. . 1400.00 for the entire year, 2.55 a gallon. Double from last year which was double from the year before. It's all relative I guess. 12 years ago I was paying .79 per gallon for 500 gallons once a year. Not bad for this part of the country, the NW.
Just so y'all know... this boiler of mine? I could buy SEVEN of the crappy Saturn cars like I drive for the price of this thing... or basically do 2 full engine-out services on my 348. It is a 12 section Burnham gas-fired boiler, rated at 385,000 BTU per hour. For reference, my commercial Wolf stove puts out 20,000 BTU -- and it's a damn monster. So I ask, "HEY PIEDMONT NATURAL GAS, WHERE'S MY ******* FRUIT BASKET OR THANK YOU CARD???"
Thanks for throwing in the part about the Ferrari engine out service, I was beginning to think this was GasChat, and to think, I almost got sucked in.
GasChat... LMAO Daniel, Don't look for the fruit basket, keep an eye out for the personal lubricant...
Daniel, We live in an old house here in Michigan (1890) about 2800 sq. ft. Last month my heat bill was $727.00 and no kiss before they gave it to me. That's one reason my wife and I want to move.
My friends all own nice victorian homes...you know the ones: 5000+ sq ft, no insulation, single pane windows... We were comparing gas notes last month. Mine: 300$ 3000 sq ft or so, new house. Theirs: 700$ Wow, I though, thats not bad...really thought theirs would be higher. Then, i visited Their house.... Everyone is in sweaters, heat is at 60 degrees!!!! 55 at night. Our heat is at 74 degrees 24 hours a day. We walk around in shorts. Our little kids play in their underwear... If you can't stomach paying to heat a large house to a reasonable temp (70 plus), perhaps its time to go smaller, no???
Now's the time to do the winterizing on the home Daniel. I found this very helpful! http://home.earthlink.net/~overboost/HomeAndGardenTV.wmv
It was 52 today here in Michigan. Almost got the Ferrari out, but theirs to much salt on the roads still. Then I heard on the radio its going to snow tommorow and buy saturday we could see 2 to 3 inches. Time to move!!!
