http://www.cardesignnews.com/site/designers/designer_interviews/display/store4/item269649/ Best part is when he discusses the the Competizione Bizzarrini AKA Miura. It pretty much spells out that Giugiaro was responsible for the Miura, which makes sense. Gandini's best design was by far the Miura, and when has a designer ever produced his best work on his first try? It didn't happen by accident unless the accident was finding one of Giugiaro drawings.
On the same website iin an earlier story: http://www.cardesignnews.com/site/home/display/store4/item234867/ in a 2011 story it shows many views of the clay model which has no interior, or drive train. It's almost like the Giugiaro family can't let go of the design they left unfinished. But in spite of the sentiment I find it not that exciting a design, not as fulfilling as the Bizzarrini 5300GT. Still it's nice that the son labored to create such a gift for his father. Fabrizio's a great guy, fun loving, I'll never forget when he brought four running prototypes to Monterey and left various and sundry journalists thrash them about the peninsula.
I have some photo's of the P538 spyder prototype that was a "roller" it looks very similar to this, but if you compare this roller to the final design there are many differences, the final car looks much much better. My point being if this car was finished it would have had similar changes made, trim ducts bumpers etc.... my guess is that it would look much more exciting.
I would love to see a close up on that Competizione Bizzarrini blueprint, but that requires you to be a member of Car Design News.
Neither GG nor MG have any reason to tell stories about what they did or didn't design: their careers speak for themselves. Probably one did the groundwork, the other the details. Interesting read about an interesting career. Funny how he now lists the Citroen DS as his favorite design, whereas in a much earlier interview he said it was the CX. Significant that both are Citroens, the latter looking like being inspired by GG's BLMC proto (forgot the name) But what a list of beautiful automobiles!
What a treat to be offered to drive those prototypes... ! Interesting reading Giugiaro's position on the Miura and Gandini, his is very tactful. And what an interesting design the yellow "Lamborghini" mock-up is: Only the very rear points toward the production Miura. The front is Bizzarini Strada (by GG and Bizzarini) and the cockpit is almost pure Alfa 33 Stradale (Scaglione) - which I don't mention to diminish the design - but to suggest how nothing is designed in a vacuum. There's a lot of shared design DNA in the cars that GG designed early and in collaboration with others.. No matter how it evolved, I'm thankful the design took the course that it did to result in the Miura. Everlasting beauty without equal.
