This is probably going to sound a bit strange but here it goes.
I colect Ferrari 1/18 models, both road cars and sports cars (gt and sport prototypes).
Thing is i have limited funds to invest in my collection, and over the years, i realised i prefere competition than road cars. Lately the marques heve been crazy issuing new race models, and unfortunatly i simply cannot buy all of them :) ...so,do you guys think i should sell the road cars and concentrate only on sport...or keep both but with fewer models from each collection? what would you guys prefere to have, a more complete collection of one theme,or a bit of everythinh?
I know this is very personal, but still would like to hear some thoughts from felow collectors...i must say however it will be hard to let go of my road models...but on the other hand ireally want to buy the competition cars that are missing!!

Pedro, based on what you described, and that you have a much stronger interest in competition cars, then that is the area that I would suggest you concentrate on. Sell the road cars..... maybe keep just a couple road, but ONLY if there are 1 or 2 that you really love. That's my two cents worth.

Buy/keep only those models that you love so much, you know you'll never want to part with them. But also keep in mind that "never" is a pretty long time.... ;)

I feel your pain Pedro. I started off buying just Ferrari models and then I saw an Aston Martin and then a Lamborghini and then a Porsche and now have over 650 models of all marques!!!! I would sell only the road cars that you need to sell to buy the competition cars. If you are left with all comp cars and no road cars, so be it. It would be a shame to sell all the road cars, miss them and have to buy them back at maybe higher prices. Just my 2 cents....

Collecting road cars is less costly than collecting competition cars which are certainly more...

    Thanks all for your opinions....
I kind of desagree with you Pat, because i only colect one model from each, and i don't buy diferente liveries, so there are only a limited number of sports cars, and when i'm done with the old ones ,there will be few new ones ,because Ferrari only delivers a few gts from time to time, while road cars are released every year....By my calculations i should need about 40 race cars to have a all the importante cars....I will focus on lm cars, and a few others from the panamericana and mmiglia or some important race...also Pat, if you look at BBR for example, the race cars are normaly cheaper, since they have the "concept 18) line....IN looksmart case, or tecnomodel, they cost the same....

I would have to say -buy the cars you like. I used to focus on just the road cars but realised I was buying models I wasn't that bothered about just to complete the set (the 612 anybody?). anyhow with the older Ferraris the line between competion and road is pretty blurred. I now buy a model if I like it and pass otherwise. Be warned though: we're spoilt for choice at the moment -there are a lot of nice models out there

Personally I like a wide variety of cars, different types of cars, from different eras, in different scales.

There does seem to be a lot of releases in 1:18 by the brands these days and they are typically really expensive.

If you are interested in building up your sport car collection I suggest either trying different scales (1/43) or try filling in the gaps with Mattel 1/18. Though the Mattel product is nowhere near as nice as BBR, going that route would allow you to fill out your collection and allow you to buy higher quality models of the race cars you really like.

What I mean is, think of the race cars you really like (say F1 cars from the 70's, or the Schumacher era F1 cars or vintage sports cars) and think of say 3-5 cars from that period that you would like to spend more money on.

And then for all the other sports/race cars, look for cheaper alternatives (1/43 scale or Mattel 1/18, etc.).

I think a model car collection is more interesting when there are differences between the various cars. When the collection is made up of cars all from the same manufacturer, the collection can appear to be kind of generic.

I already collect ferrari f.1 in 1/43 scale...i have them all..or almost....and still some 1/12 scale so i'm ok in that department. Road and sports cars are all in 1/18 from various brands....Elite, Kyosho, BBr, Bluemoon, Looksmart, Tecnomodel, Gmp, Trl, Cmc....mostly red but not a lot of them....i also agree rthat at the moment there are too many releases wich makes it very tricky not to overspend (and choose teh right models)

Have been collecting handbuilts since 1988 and the subjects and models have changed over the years. Only have a few left from the first years, (+/- 10) and the subjects have changed from all Ferrari handbuilts from different years and different scales.

Its nice to have a collection that is never finished, I have had over 4000 models over the years but the number never exceeded 350 pieces. Finding rare pieces and selling others is not only fun to do, its allways a challenge.

At the moment I mainly collect the very very rare and exclusive models. Not only because I have a high standard, but also because of value and space.

Its a taboo topic, but I think its important to know I can reclaim most of my investment in the collection when/ if I decided to sell or when I am forced to sell.

Besides that, I prefer a smaller collection with only the best I can get, at the moment 150 models and around 50 rare kits. They show better when you have less.. I don't want my collection taking over my house. Its a hobby, not a religion (oops sorry..:) and I am determant not to let it evolve into an obsession.

There is allways a new find on the horizon, but be selective, its better to have some good ones with a theme or subject than everything you like, One canoot have everything, and at the pace Ferrari pushes out new cars its allmost impossible to build an overview without having loads of models and money involved.. I have hardly no car from the 80's or later.. there are don't interest me at all!

I'm also thinking about those lines, although the values of our respective collections are obviously very diferente. My f.1 collection doesnt take much space and is well organized in 2 display cases, the 1/18s take a lot of space, and i don't want it to look like a shop, hence i mentioned 40 to 50 models tops....i want to display them sideways, so they will take some space, wich i have in my office. Also,if i stick to one theme,it will be easier to control my expenses in the hobby, as i said, there are only a limited number of sport prototypes from Ferrari, since they stoped racing in 73 (apart from the 333sp)....i try to buy the factory cars....now Ferrari only releases gts, like the 458 ou 488 gt2 and gt3...i prefer the gt2 models, so i probably will only add a new car from 5i n 5 years, wich leaves space and Money to get the old ones....i wil ltry to make a list of what i really want and post it...i think i want to throw everything in competition..but i'm still holding back in selling the road cars..one get's attached to this things, lolo
