I'm looking to buy my first smart phone. Thinking of the following devices: Nokia N97, HTC Hero, Palm Pre.

All N97s are unlocked. The HTC hasn't been released here yet, but looks like a winner. Palm Pre is Sprint only, so does anybody know if there will be an unlocked or AT&T supported (I'm staying with AT&T) Pre anytime soon?

    Thanks for the advice.

    Jack.

I had an HTC thru Alltel and exchanged it for a Delve (their phones were rather limited at that time). The HTC was more of a mini hand-held computer than a phone, plus I wasn't totally happy with the slider keyboard.

    Good luck.

I don't believe ATT will be getting the Pre. Verizon will be though.

I believe my friend has the Nokia E72 and likes it.

Since you are on AT&T, why no iPhone?

I have an HTC Fuze from AT&T and regret ever buying it. It is the biggest piece of crap phone I have ever owned.

    SLOW
    SLOW
    SLOW
    Reception sucks
    Voice quality is poor
    Keyboard sucks
    Camera is o.k.
Sync with Mozilla Sunbird is only via BirdieSync
    I hate it.

    How's that?

p.s. Yes, it has been flashed with the latest AT&T firmware and has a 2gig chip. It still sucks.

Fair question. I'm just not an Apple guy, I guess, plus I'd rather have an unlocked phone than be comitted to a service plan.

Thanks, Carol. The Hero will have a touch screen, but note a keyboard. The N97 and Paml Pre will have touch screens and sliding keyboards.

Apple iPhone sucks if you want to be remotely productive. If you want a nifty toy, it's great. No tethering, no MMS, crappy on-screen keyboard, terrible address book function that takes you forever to get to a specific contact, multiple strokes/keypresses needed that are one button away on other phones, satnav that doesn't maintain the same orientation as your heading (so you are going in one direction in real life-forwards, and you could well be going backwards on the screen, meaning when it says you go left you need to actually go right), terrible service and dropped calls, no flash, crappy camera, crappy camera interface, no multitasking, very poor interface design decisions in some areas, restrictive in others, sync that takes forever and has very little that you can customize, crap battery life, crap accessories, crap reception, crap service with dropped calls (known bug), weak vibration so you miss calls all the time unless you like being obnoxious with ringers and ring tones, etc., etc. I have a 3Gs and I regret buying it and will be trading it in for a blackberry or smart samsung soon.

You drop by an apple store and ask them about any of these things and they are either clueless or they think you are an idiot for not worshipping apple.

Also forgot to mention, there is no bluetooth printing, no bluetooth sync with computers, no ability to connect to anything except a headset, and even that is just for phone calls, not music or sound from other applications. Even as an mp3 player, I have seen better interfaces than the itunes one. I really don't understand why people rave about this phone as if it's the second coming.

Yesterday with my HTC was almost the last straw. I need some recommendations here. My req's:

    QWERTY keyboard
    quad band GSM
    smaller than a blackberry
don't need email, don't need music, don't need all this excess crap. I use an Asus EEEpc for quick needs on the net.

    Any ideas?

Should have added, there's an advanced search link next to the search link on that site...it allows you to specify all sorts of criteria for your phone.

Uzy - Have you used that Samsung? I'm worried the Windows Mobile is why my existing HTC is so freakin' slow....

No, can't say I have. Check the processor specs and online reviews? I had a Samsung before the iphone and it was ok, but switching to camera mode was painfully slow. I guess I can live with that. Are you referring to internet page loading speeds, application switching, or something else?

I want to get that phone too, but I have to figure out a way to get rid of my iphone without losing (too much) money. I suppose I could "lose it" and have AmEx cover it. It sucks. I missed the return date by a week. AT&T as a service sucks too, but I guess I am stuck with them for two years. Their international plans are huge ripoffs.

I wonder if it's an issue with your phone or just that model. My coworker has the HTC Touch and has loved it and plans on getting the Touch 2.

Browse around phonearena.com and see what they say.

After wading through God-all reviews and forums on the three devices in question I've decided on the HTC Hero, subject to being compatible with my carrier, AT&T.

Try it before you buy it.

Hell, if you want my HTC Fuze AT&T (used for 2 months) I'll gladly sell it to you for a nice price.

OK, I just saw on the web that the Hero is going to be a Sprint phone. ARRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHH........

Here's what's important to me. Please make suggestions if you like:

    Phone
    AT&T service
    email
    web access
    touch screen
    navigation

don't care about music, camera, etc., don't need to be tethered to a business system...device is for personal use only.

Daniel, thanks for your offer. Please PM details.

    Jack.

Call me in the morning. For $100, it's yours -- but I have to tell you, it is slow.

I just packed into the original box: Phone, battery, USB cable, power cable, CD-ROM, manual. Only think I'm not including is the optionally purchased 8gb micro SD card. I used that in my new Samsung.

Thanks, Daniel. That's a very nice offer, but I decided to use my wife's old Blackberry until I can make a decision.

    Jack.
