Quick question - Are there different assembly numbers for the engine and the suspension in the engine compartment? is there such thing as a suspension assembly number?

    Thanks!

THE assembly # is Ferrari's in house numbering system and applies to the car as a whole. The VIN is put on to satisfy government regs. It (assembly#) was adopted not long after we forced them to use our standardized VIN system.

Internal documents such as TSB's refer to Assy#. Also the parts books use it as a method to determine correct part application in running (mid year) changes.

    There is a seperate engine# and trans#.

Thank you for the nice summary.

The number that I was seeing was right at the top of the shock tower at the rear. Is this the correct place to find the engine number?

Ferrari has been using Assembly Numbers long before the VIN was created... The earliest one I can find is on a Series II 250 GT PF Cab from 1959... But the Assembly Numbers referred to in this thread, as you said, started after the invention of the VIN... Assembly Number 00654 belongs to a RHD Mondial T coupe made in 1989...

When do we start talking about numero internos...? :)

That is the assy #. The motor # on a V8 is on a rectangular area next to the oil filter. It will have a number like F106B. That will be the motor type. Next to that it will have a number like 00758. That will be the motor # and means it was the 758th F106B made.

If you still have the service book for that car, it is the one with orig dealer and owner info in the front, at some point they started to list the orig eng and trans # there.
