My kids are all less than 5 years old. To them, the ferrari is the "white car," the porsche is the "little one", and mommies is the fast one (minivan - more a reflection of driving habits! ;) ). They really have no specific interest in the cars. They love getting rides, love the stop and go, and enjoy spending time with dad. But to them, the ferrari mights as well be a product from Tyco.

I know that at some point they will suddenly reach "situational awareness." I suspect it will be some day in 3rd or 4th grade. Some kids will be talking about hemi's and chevies...my kids will blurt out that their dad never had one of those. He drives some white car called a Ferrari, and then they walk away...

No one thinks much of it, until one of the kids tells their dad that some kids dad owns a "Ferrari." Parents don't believe him. The kid then doesn't believe my kids, who pretty much don't care. But, at that point they start to understand that the car represents something other folks just don't have. What other kids and their parents fantasize about, some other kids dad actually has.

As far as my kids' current thought process, every kid's dad owns a ferrari, a porsche, and a bunch of buildings... They just haven't hit the point, where they realise, some folks have very different lives... Sometimes I walk with my kids through a building, telling them that this will all be theirs one day :). They shrug their shoulders, say "OK daddy...can we ride our bikes in here?" And then they just start running around...

At what point did your kids understand that a ferrari is a cool car, and not just a place holder to throw their toys on in the garage :) ?

    Was there an epiphany? :)

My son just turned 3; he loves cars. He prefers my '71 911 (I think b/c he sits much higher in that car, and can see out better, also it sounds good).

My daughter, 7, is a huge fan of going to the track - whether I'm driving, or the Monterey Historics. She loves the Ferrari, the sound, the power, and just the car. She doesn't like that I won't let her put her feet on the black leather dash though...

I think it depends a lot. Since our daughter was born, we've always had interesting cars and I've spent a lot of time driving them, working on them, etc. Going to the track doesn't hurt either. My son is a little young, but I've always tried to include my daughter in the car activities - she rode shotgun in my Boxster S at the local Porsce parade event, she works the jack when we change wheels, etc.

I've been lucky that way... now we'll see how the kids like the 5+ hour drive to the track this evening...

Bo, we have concerns about how are children grow up also, but I guess since New Mexico has such a widely diverse socio-economic environment, my children (at least the 7 year old) "get" that things are evenly distributed. My daughter annually culls through her toys and gives the ones she's outgrown to charity.

Got my Ferrari when my youngest daughter was 7. She really understood it was special, even more special than a minivan, or a truck. The appreciation for cars has to be brought out through discussion and involvement.

My 4 year old (3 when I got the car) has always been more excited by the car than anyone else in the family (including me). I go out to the garage about 2 times a night to look at it. She goes 3 times.

My dad got his 328's when I was 3ish; I plated with my Batman figures on them. Shows how much I appreciated them then. Now on the other hand, I'm more of a gearhead than my dad (fortunately or unfortunately), and it took me until now to convince him to get another.

Appreciate isn't enough to describe how I feel about the Ferrari (and Turbo). Right now they are both 100% Detailed and sitting the garage waiting for the weather to get better. I think now that I'm older I realize that the cars not only provide amazing performance and are really great, but (most importantly) they bring me closer to my dad. The cars are a venue for us to do stuff-- whether it's driving them, washing them, or sitting at Starbucks looking at them, they add to our lifestyle. Not just our adreniline. Once kids realize this, that's when they'll appreciate them.

My sister was 4 when my parents got the 360. She loved it the first time she saw the car. Now she's 7, she appreciated the car more.

depends on the kid (obviously). Daughter thought it was cool when I brought it home 2 years ago when she was 9, then her friends thought it was really cool and she started to get it.

Son is now 7 and doesn't get it at all - maybe because he can only see sky and bounces around and "daddy, I feel sick....".

They both get that it's unique when strange kids come around asking to see the Ferrari.

My kid appreciated my TR from the day I brought it home. I have allways been a sports car guy. I raced at Watkins Glen for fifteen years. I went to my first race there when I was Six. My son went to his first race when he was Two. I grew up going to races at Watkins Glen when it was a Formula 1 track, not a NASCAR track. Seeing Can Am cars, Ferraris, Porsches, Panteras, etc. OLD SCHOOL! That has rubbed off on him. He knows a TR, F40, Enzo, 333SP, and so on. When he sat on Santas lap before last Christmas. Santa asked him what he wanted for Christmas. He told him a Lamborghini Muira.

I am trying to figure out if this is a thread bent on trying to figure out when a child will be able to fuel an adult's ego..... ????

A kid does not appreciate ANYTHING until they can put whatever it is in perspective with other things.

I have books that are worth $800 - but nobody knows that unless they 'know' books: one is like the other... a 1968 Autocourse is worth $600, a 1998 Autocourse is worth $20-30.

Should we discuss old How Wheels vs. new Hot Wheels ?

I have two daughters, 7 and 5. They both know that Daddy is looking for a Ferrari-car and that the car is special. They also can spot a Ferrari from a mile away! :) I was looking at GT4's online and happened across a blue one when my daughter came into the office and said, "Daddy, I want your Ferrari to be RED.....ALL Ferraris should be red."
    She appreciates!!!

now thats a bright kid and has good taste at such a young age!!

I was allways a car nut, my earliest memory is going out into the garage with my dad as he fixed a dent in the fender that had some surface rust on it on his 1977 GrandPrix, I was 3. My first Ferrari i saw when i was 6 and i still remember that.
As i dont have kids or a ferrari i cant say but some kids are just brough up to know cars.

My fourteen year old really likes the modern supercars primarily but really has been enthusiastic about older Ferraris as well. Since I just got mine a few months ago, he was already up to speed on the 308's/328's due to my enthusiasm over them for quite sometime. He could identify these cars around 9 or 10 years old.

Well surely my 4 yr old doesn't really understand...but she's learned alot from me. When she peeks her head in the garage she does point and say 'ooohhhh, Ferrari!' And well aware that Guido and Luigi are HUGE fans of my car (those with kids will understand).

But the 2 yr old is the funniest - she'll run laps around the car yelling 'horsey' every time she sees one (that's 4x per lap) :) And that's her in my thumbnail pic running around the house with my Ferrari hat on backwards....

LoL.....My daughter's toy Luigi has to go everywhere in that car....wether she's in it or not. If I'm going somewhere without her, she runs up and says that Luigi wants to go to.

At a ferrari breakfast one morning, she brought Luigi with her, and said that he pee'd himself he was so happy. I was at a loss.
