my local dealer says he will have a used 612 for me eventually, and i can give him my 456mgt as a partial trade-in. what level do you guys think is appropriate for this, assuming conditions being equal. my guess is that i would be willing to pay $50k, but not sure how much more. any thoughts?

Ross, I don't follow the 4-seater market that much so I can't really say much about the numbers.

However, everybody who has ever driven a 612 raves about the car. So, maybe you shouldn't drive one until you have made your deal. :)

    the 612 is a $225k car.

how much is your 456 worth?

I just added a 575 to my collection and love it. Do you have to have 4 seats?

The 612's are still at around $200k, while 456's are below $100k. So it would be quite a bit on top of your car. However, IMHO, the 612 is much nicer than the 456.

612s will suffer massive depreciation, as all V12 Ferraris and particularly 2+2s. I suggest you wait a little. However, $50k is too optimistic, IMHO. I think your 456 will lose a bit of money in the meantime as well, and if you trade it in you will not get market price for it as the dealer has to make money on it as well. In two years' time, you should be able to pick up a 612 for $140k, trading in your 456 for $75k. Guesstimate.

well in switzerland the 456mgt has hit bottom around $100k, for ones in decent condition. from what i can tell from my constant watching of the market, mine is probably one of the top 5 in the country (pristine condition, 7500 km, fsh). so i think i can flip mine for that amount without much trouble, and so does the dealer.

conversely the 612 market here is a very slow one with few sales actually being made, and if you have an odd color then its dead. the inter dealer prices on grigio ingrid or bleu mirabeau are running at around $150k for 2004 0r 2005 models with about 20k miles.

so, now you see where my estimate comes from.

the way i see it, in 6 months time, my dealer is going to be long one too many 612's at a price point that excludes most used buyers, whereas there are buyers for 456mgt's in this town, and there are only 2 for sale for a 400km radius.

voila. i may not get one at that delta until next spring. so be it, its not like i'm walking to work....:)

Why do a trade? If the 456 market is as good as you say? Sell the 456 now for top dollar and use the cash to buy the discounted 612. If the deal on the 612 won’t fly now just put the $$$ in some good short term CD’s or GOLD and do the deal when the price is right.

Sounds reasonable enough. As you say, it's hardly a pain driving your 456. :)

BTW, I took my 550 to your neck of the woods three weeks ago (friend of mine works in Geneva). What a lovely trip! You're one lucky man to drive those roads all the time!

Good plan except for the chance of being without a Ferrari to drive. I have endured 7 months without a Ferrari. It's no fun. However, I'm searching for the PERFECT 550 for me and willing to wait. I also notice that prices have dropped dramatically since last spring. A '98 nero 550 sat at Ferrari of SF all that time. They had it listed at $109K and $119K intermittently. It's now on Ebay with a buy it now price of $89.5K.

    sorry to sound so negative...
i have 456M gta really nice car for our family of 4..
i test drove a 612 over summer for a day in town and then a track session at silverstone..
the car is VERY VERY accomplished
    BUT so utterly boring..
the engine has no excitement about it all all, and this is one of the most important things we need out of our Ferrari's
the interior is nice..but somehow the 456/550/575 had something about them that made you feel special as if you had arrived.. the smell and feel of leather ..the dials etc..
the reason they drop up to £90000 in one year in the UK is that they are not a pretty car
yes the 612 is up to late/ the latest thing. but i don't know if i would call it stepping up...may be a really small step up..
    sorry ..just my 2pence/cents worth

+1 : Ferrari's or not, and in some cases Ferrari's can be even more so, the dealer is a CAR SALESPERSON....won't go into that too much but, he'll more than likely try to low ball the bottom 'blue' book 456 price and high ball the 612.

The 456 is about bottomed out. If in order, you can expect a decent price selling on your own and IMO very short order of time.

The 612 is waiting for you, and to be honest, color combo is going to be important since [don't flame me] the 612 is very plain in exterior. When you are ready to buy I'll just bet, the price will even be lower.

basically: standard get your best $$ selling it, and get the 612 you want afterwards....

NOW having said that...it IS great to just do the transaction with a trusted, service, oriented dealer in one fell, swoop.

seeing the way guys on fchat are dropping 355's or such into 3x8 bodies, I guess this isn't far off in 20 years....

    Great advice.
Sell your car first and you'll find it a strategically smart move for future opportunities.
Then again, we tend to add a lot of emotion in these purchases...and strategy suffers.

On the other hand, a plus for a transaction through the dealer is that if you trade in then you'll only pay sales tax on the difference between your old car and your new one.

i usually try to seperate the transactions as well. however, in this case, the dealer swap holds some advantages.
first, he owes me one (long story). secondly, he has a market for 456, whereas he has been holding the same 3 612's for 6 mths, so he wud much rather sit long in the books a perfect 456mgt with the right colors at 100k, and be rid of a 612 in colors he doesnt like at 150-180k.

as for color, i really dont mind either grigio ingrid OR bleu mirabeau. and i have a cunning plan for 'changing' the color....

ok, here is another wrinkle to the question....

at what delta would you sell (my) 2001 456mgt, and buy a 2003 vanquish. same miles and condition.

second question: how about vs a 2004 bentley continental ?

I love my 456MGT way too much to trade it. I chose it over the Bentley. The Ferrari is beautiful in a way the Bentley can't hope to rival. Of course the Bentley is more car but I don't care. The AM, same thing. So when the time comes I'll be adding to the collection.

I wish the 612 were prettier. I'd be driving it.
