ATI Harmonic Dampers for these cars

    ATI Dampers are used on many cars to help reduce engine harmonics. I have had several over the years on several different cars and always was really happy with them. These are not for performance benefits, but are to aid in engine life and balance. I'm sure many of you know about these as well.

    Is there a reason these are not made for Ferraris? I know flat plane cranks have more harmonics so I'd assume it could be beneficial, or is the factory crankshaft pulley/balancer already really good at it's job?

    No market?
    No benefit cause the engine are already for precise with a perfect balancer?
    Just not tried yet, but actually could be beneficial?

    Might be a dumb question, but really just curious more than anything, and I still only have limited knowledge on this platform.

    Ive used ati on ls engines and yes correct

    However its a ferrari
    Pretty sure they know what they are doing

    I bought aftermarket sway bar links for another car
    Lifetime warranty
    10000km later worn out
    So much for lifetime warranty

    Aftermarket is rarely better there is a reason you buy ferrari
    Its engineered performance

    Fair, and not disagreeing. But many things can be improved on Ferraris. For example the header runners are terrible on the factory unit, but cost effective. I would assume they wouldn't skimp on a balancer, but perhaps there are improvements to be made? Maybe not though. Just asking, so thank you for your reply.

    The 360 engine is internal balanced where by changing a part like that won't affect the rotational balance.
    That being said is a part like that far superior then a mass production part that ferrari has on the shelf for there f131 engine. I have only used fluiddamper for my old-school builds.
    ATI is a great company and could it help with harmonics in the engine. That is a great? Would you feel better or make you sleep better only you would know. But like any internal balanced engine it all lies on the Quality of the person doing that job.
    Would I want one.. sure why not. Billet ,sfi approved made for high rpm. I think it's a win for all. Now the hard part is if they would even consider a run of the mill to make them.

    Don't do it. When I build engines the crank, damper, flywheel, and clutch are sent off to be balanced as a complete assembly. Ferrari are the same: it's why on the F430 the clutch must be fitted with the yellow marks aligned to a specific position in order to keep the rotational balance in sync.

    Bolting on a new part that wasn't balanced or designed as part of the original assembly is most likely not going to yield a positive result - especially not on a high RPM engine.

    I'm trusting that Ferrari has internally balanced my engine and are probably pretty good at it. I'd rather put my money into other mods.

    I can tell you that I have a '37 Cadillac coupe street rod that has a 1970 Cadillac 500ci engine in it. It is internally balanced and does not have a harmonic balancer from the factory. It seems when an engine is built with acute attention to all details and specs it can last a good long time and run smooth without one. I once had a 472ci (same; no balancer) Cad engine that ran smooth and great for over 200K in a '49 Caddy street rod.

    Probably some combination of those. I'm far from the "OEM is always best" type, and the stock setup probably isn't perfect, but I have faith in Ferrari on this one. The engine seems durable for what it is, and with the low production numbers and even lower number of people who would try this, I think it'd be difficult to prove anything and make a business case to manufacture it. The stakes are too high and I couldn't see myself buying one under any circumstance.

    So you think the 360 is external balance. Where doing assembly they need all parts from the flywheel to the front balancer.
    Internal does the opposite where they don't use those parts. Most cars built from the 2000 onward are Internal.
    My 66 ford mustang is external
    But my 2012 gmc with a LS motor is Internal.

    It's worth clearing up some of the concepts: a crankshaft pulley with a rubber insert is a harmonic damper. It does not perform a balancing function. It's idea is to remove unwanted harmonics caused by loads on the crank. The harmonics can lead to stress-related (resonance) failures.

    Balance is the physical balancing of the rotational assembly: material is added or removed (normally in the crank counterweights) to ensure that the entire pulley/crank/flywheel/clutch assembly will not unduly shake itself to pieces within the designed operating RPM range of the engine.

    Harmonics are related to the crank and block design, and operating range of the engine.
    Balance is down to manufacturing tolerances: an econobox will have a higher degree of physical imbalance because it's cheaper to achieve, and a lower RPM range, which is safer for an engine with lower tolerances and cheaper to produce.

    It's unlikely that the Ferrari engine will exhibit significant harmonics because the materials used are above average, the block is strong, and particular attention is paid to the crank to block mounting system to ensure rigidity of the rotating assembly.

    The two concepts come together when talking about a crank pulley/harmonic damper, because a perfectly balanced engine can be upset by changing the end pulley to one of a different design: I personally wouldn't do it on a high-RPM engine without re-balancing the entire bottom end rotating assembly to take into account the new pulley design and characteristics.

    Hopefully that makes sense.

    Yes that is why I stated that the f131 engine is internal balanced. Where parts like a balancer or flywheel don't play a roll in the balance of the engine.

    It applies to both. The rotating mass is balanced as a complete assembly. In both types there is scope to affect the balance by changing pulley type.

    Thanks for all of your replies and clean512. I am not an expert on this stuff, so please understand I am only typing to learn. If this would be a bad modification, I wouldn't want to do it, but if it could actually help us all out, that'd be great. I think the best part of a Ferrari is their engine, so I do also agree that this might be a pointless endeavor, but I'd still like to see if that's the case.

    So according to you if you change out the external items for non OEM, it will throw things off. Under that understanding, the factory flywheels would all need to be the exact same weight from one another and the factory crank pullies would need to all be the exact same weight from each other, right? Would it be beneficial for me to precisely weigh two factory flywheels and two factory crank pullies to see if they are exactly the same weight, and if they are not, how far apart in weight they actually are? Or is that still missing the point?

    Related to this. If it even matters…
    New flywheel vs old flywheel. 0.2 lb difference in weight. Will weigh both the original crankshaft pulley and the extra crankshaft pulley as well to compare weights.

    I worked on an MAK marine diesel which had a 12 inch diameter damper bolted to each camshaft and an approx 4 feet diameter one fitted to the end of the crankshaft- real fun to change one.

    This has been a discussion for years on Rennlist for 997 GT cars with single mass LWFW's. Cam actuator bolts backing out and going down into the oil pump was a heavily discussed issue that many people blamed on engine harmonics. Dundon sells a dampener from ATI and I run it on my 997.2 RS. Does it do anything? I'm not sure. But I drank the cool aid lol.

    If dundon sells them it must be some good cool aid. If I ever get a RS you dam we be sure it will get there full package

    I can have these made for the Ferrari 360. They just need an order of 10. Cost will be $700-$800 each. I need to supply them with a crank pulley and with a crankshaft or front stub to measure to the 0.0000X". It's ATI, so they are well known in the industry and they already make them for other Ferraris already, as well as Lamborghinis and Maseratis, etc. They assured me that it can't cause any harm, but only good. Also, said that the engine power and RPMs are very low compared to some of their applications. Wonder if we should go for it?

    For me it's just a simple issue of I really don't think the juice is worth the squeeze. There's certainly many 360's out there that have well over 50K miles on them that are still running smooth and strong.
    Just my .02 but I'm not seeing a realized advantage. As per my previous posts; My first hand knowledge proved to me that even GM got a huge cast iron 500ci. engine to run for a good long time without any balancer installed on the assembly line.

    Kinda reminds me of folks that install a "chip" into their vehicle that claims a 5% HP increase. I seriously doubt you will feel anything from that upgrade in the driver's seat.
