What's the best method of attaching clear plastic headlight covers that mount on cars like a 246 or other car with headlight buckets? Is there a neat, clean way that uses a minimum amount of screw holes, or even no screw holes?

Screws right into the body on designed mounting tabs? Is there a threaded part in the body the screws go into? We're trying to avoid just making holes. How do you avoid the cover touching the paint? How hard is it to make a uniform gap; threaded inserts in the body seem like a good way to do this.

This is how they were originally done. No inserts. You can get as fancy as you want inserts, foam 3m gasket, but no matter what you do making them easily removable is the way to go. Don't seal them. You'll be wanting to remove them for cleaning. IMHO less is more.
