My dog Mercedes who is 8 years old has been given by our Vet days or maybe a week to live. Last Saturday she stopped eating and drinking water, but has not been acting like she feels bad. On Monday we took her to her doctor and he said don't be that concerned b/c she was not getting sick and he said to bring back on Tuesday if she did get better. On Monday night she did get sick and again on Tuesday morning so we took her and he kept her for testing. When the results came back he said that she was having kidney failure. Her creatine (s/p) was at 11.2 when it should be around 1. She had been on some meds for a skin allergy and we stopped giving those to her last Sunday. On Tuesday our doctor started her on fluids hoping to clean out whatever was causing her the trouble. On Thursday he ran blood work and her numbers came back worse. We picked her up and brought her home. She still acts ok, but she will not eat her food. She will eat treats and Cheerios, and she has not gotten sick in 3 days. While at the hospital she was eating dog food off and on, but now again she will not touch it but she is drinking water again.

Our Vet said there really was not anything that could be done and he has given her maybe a week to live as of Thursday. Is there anything anyone can suggest? We feel like we have a great doctor, we have been taking pets to him for 20 years, but wanting to make sure there wasn't something else we could do. She is our little girl!!

    Sorry to hear your trouble.

I'm not a vet but I know about high creatinine.

    May I speak (type) directly?

Animals are very fortunate compared to people in that we allow them to pass away from renal failure. It is the gentlest way that I know of. They tend to get quiet, sleepy and harder to wake up. They pass away peacefully with no pain at all.

If I had to choose a way for my pet to pass it would be kidney failure.

for better or worse, people almost never do that now that we have dialysis and transplants.

Again, so sorry to hear your trouble.

Matt - So sorry to read your post. We lost a wonderful Pug named Boo-Boo a few years back to kidney failure.
For a while I was giving him daily fluid treatments at home myself.
That involved one of those bags of saline solution, a tube and a needle.
    That was not much fun.
No - there really isn't anything you can do except make them as comfortable as possible and make them feel loved.

More recently - just a few months ago - I had to put another wonderful Pug to sleep for respiratory issues.
It was absolutely one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do, but he'd suffered for far too long and I could not let that continue.

It does not sound as if she's in any distress or any pain, so that is a good thing.
I'm sure this is already the case - but just be sure she knows how much you love her and how special she is.

Please keep us posted - we'll be thinking about you.

    Best wishes...

    Scott

    Thanks for all the comments!

She seems to be doing better. Still won't eat dog food, but she will eat just about anything else. Really likes the Cheerios! She even has more energy then we first brought her back home. I have done some research about renal failure and her behavior is encouraging, but like they always say the numbers don't lie.

maybe there's something about the particular brand of dog food that she makes her stomach upset?

how about feeding her small amounts of yummy tender chicken or steak? even if it's not the best thing for dogs to eat, if she is in the twilight moments of her life, might as well give her a taste of the REALLY good stuff. :)

/aside-- those stories a few months back about melamine in pet food are coming to mind. I hope the dog food you have was bought more recently.

Matt--definitely seek out another vet for another opinion. If possible, look for a homeopathic vet too, one that practices both traditional and holistic medicine. Very important--HOLD ON TO THE DOG FOOD. Do not feed her any more of it. What brand and formulation is it? I'll save the details for later, but it's possible that she's experiencing effects of toxicity, possibly from her food or something else she ingested. You will want the option of having the food tested, since this is how the recall began almost 2 years ago. Some times dogs can encounter an illness that is extremely unique to a region (bites, poisoning, etc.), and despite all their knowledge the vets may not be too familiar with the condition and treatment. But I would not wait--your vet should be consulting with other vets to try and pinpoint what's going on. But don't sit and wait. Good luck--all the best wishes.

now that you mention it, I do recall there was an issue with dogfood or other animal food having melamine, the same stuff the Chinese babies were getting sick with a month or so ago.

Bad manucfacturers were putting melamine in food stock to raise the nitrogen (to fake higher protein content) but it is apparently toxic.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Mercedes is acting normal again. She even ate some dry dog food today for the first time in over a week. Each day she seems to get more energy. It does not make sense. We had her blood work done yesterday and her creatinine was 11 down from 11.6 four days earlier. From everything that I read anything over 5 is really bad. My Vet has said there really isn't any medical reason as to why she would be doing as good as she is. He did not expect her to make it this long.

So we have a dog that has been given days to live, but each day she acts like she feels better and her numbers continue to be awful? It was recommended that we take her to a internal medicine specialist and we have an appointment for Monday morning. We could not get in sooner b/c of the holidays. We are hoping she makes it that long.

My 14 yo cat "China" died of kidney failure (I did the pink shot) but after several months treatment. It was a long, slow death w/ me giving her 100ml Ringer’s lactate under her skin every day. Yeah, liter bag, tubing & needle. I had to hold her down & stick under the skin down her back & let it run every day. It did make her feel better for a time but only 6 months or so. Do your dog a favor & end it before it get miserable.

Used to take my animals to her then my cat had problems with his ears she kept giving us crazy homeopathic remedies to use. Had to take him to another vet he had bad ear infection. Gave him antibiotics and it cleared up. If you are going for check ups or annual shots she is ok. IMO If my pet has any type of medical problem I would not use her.

Now that my sister has graduated from Vet school in Florida I hope to not have to worry about a vet any longer if she moves back home. :)

    Thanks for asking!!

Her creatinine is down to 4.7 from as high as 11.6. The specialist ran a few other tests and they came back negative. She does have a bladder infection that we are now treating. The Dr. thinks she had a reaction to new medication that she took for a few days before she stopped eating. The Dr. said it can take up to 3-weeks to get it our of her system so we are doing fluids at home and taking her in for new blood tests in a week.

She is acting normal, except she is not eating again. She will eat certain treats, but no dog food or even meat, turkey, etc. The Dr. is not that concerned about that right now because she is still drinking and not getting sick. She might not feel like eating because of the fluids or the antibiotic for her infection or both.

We wish she would eat more, but at least her numbers have had a big improvement. We are not out of the woods yet, but we did not expect her to make it this long, so I guess we are in bonus time right now.

Our dog has made a full recovery!!! It is a canine miracle!! All of her numbers have returned to normal and she is eating everything we put in front of her. Thanks to everyone and their kind words over the past few weeks. She had some sort of reaction to her medicine and it took awhile for it to work its' way out of her system. Mercedes is the one on the left!
