Any suggestions on what to buy or what not to buy?
I got one from Lowe's that seems to be fine. It's not something that I researched very heavily to be honest w/ you. I just went to the nearest big box store and bought one. It hasn't collapsed yet...is that a good testament?

not to throw a wet blanket on the festivites but.. it depends on how much you'll be using it. if you're just going up there to get the christmas lights you won't need a heavy duty model. they are rated on the box. i've installed a few and in most cases i've opted for the strongest available. they're pretty straight forward to put up, just follow the instructions. now back to the show......

Make sure it has enough leg for the height of your garage ceiling. The standard ones are pretty cheaply built but will work fine for occasional use. BT
