Hey everyone. I'm graduating college in December, and I plan on relocating to Boston. My degree is going to be in Finance, plus I had an accounting internship at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City.

    Reasons for moving up north:
    1. I fell in love with the city this past August when I visited for the first time.
    2. I particularly enjoyed the layout of the city and, being Italian, developed a huge appreciation for the North End.
    3. I know there is a lot of potential with the type of degree that I will hold to foster a successful career in the financial industry.
    4. I was quite amazed at how "nice" (of course that word is being used relative to my personal experiences in/ near my area) the people were, and how clean the areas of the North End and the Back Bay were as well.
    5. My girlfriend lives there.

    Problem:
Being that I will be completely new to the area, I have no contacts by way of securing a job interview. I have no idea where I want to (read: afford) live; however, I would really like to stay within the city.

I plan on visiting the area again during the Thanksgiving holiday to be with my girl and her family. If anyone in the area would be willing to lend me a hand in advice, possible connections to the industry, or even be my first friend in the area, I would greatly appreciate that.

Thank you very much. I hope that making this transition to a new area will be as smooth as it can be, realistically. I'm reaching out to the people of this forum, because we all share an appreciation for fine automobiles, and I like to think that people are nice enough to make someone feel more comfortable in an area that is completely alien to them.

Boston is nice, I agree and TONS of finance jobs.

Where you will live will be heavily dictated by what you want to spend on an apartment per month. Many people who live and work in Boston dont even own cars - got a lot of friends who do that.

You can go as far out as Allston/Brighton/Brookline and still be right on the green line. I used to work downtown and I was seriously considering renting an apartment near North Station. It was on the road that goes between North Station up to City Hall (forget the name of that street). Reasonable prices but this was 5 years ago.

As for job connections, I dont have any for you since most of the folks I know are very much out of downtown, but just about ALL of the major accounting and consulting firms have offices in Boston. You could just spend a day or two easy walking around the financial district going into these places asking about employment. To me, showing up and asking about a job says a lot about a person above someone who submits a resume online and waits for the phone to ring. I have gotten many jobs in the past that way - if you can sell yourself and your ambition and skills and enthusiasm, you should have no problems getting something going. Also, check out the job sites like Monster.com and others. Go to the companies' websites and see whats available too. Is there a specific industry you want to work in or are you happy to be in the finance dept of a company that is not in the financial business? For example, you wanna work at a brokerage or you are OK working at Prudential Insurance?

Hi Mike and thanks for the response. I am very new to the area so I'm not even sure what area it was that you used to live. I was getting the feeling that a personal automobile is both a hassle and a financial burden (girlfriend pays $350/month for enclosed garage on... Boylston I think?). In addition, I definately figured that the quality/ proximity of my apartment to the city will depend heavily on my financial situation. I probably won't have the slightest idea until I have an offer from a firm.

I really appreciate the advice regarding job hunting. Never thought about it that way only because I didn't think it would have made much of a difference.

To be honest, I am open to a few different areas. I have a passion for the markets and, therefore, would primarily like to find something within the fields of Investment Banking (specifically M&A), wealth management (institutional or private), and trading (have an interest in foreign exchange as well). I'm also open to consulting as well. I've been on Boston Consulting Group's website, and I took about two hours to go through their website. I must say I was impressed with their services, so I decided to research more about the company in greater detail. Turns out, they have been voted one of the best firms to work for in the area.

I realize that I have high expectations for an entry level position. But with my grades and my ability to sell myself, I really think that I will be able to "raise eyebrows."
