This is the cockpit of a 1958 Porsche Speedster seen at a recent car show. The owner demonstrated a unique feature of the car. The radio, an AM/FM/SW unit, fits in a sleeve under the dash. Slide it out and pull out the antenna, and, voila, a nice portable radio, with its own battery and speaker! The art-deco styling is, naturally, typical of the era.

And you thought slide-out radios and removable faceplates didn't come along until the '80s?

Pretty cool Jim. I don't normally go for older cars, but I do like that Porsche. Only other classic cars I really like are 60s Aston Martin's.

Not a bad idea at all. Wonder what the problem was.

Lack of demand probably. How often do you wish you could take the radio out of your car?

i'm sure the problem was that it sounded like garbage. your factory stereo had one speaker that fired down into the carpeting :) . i bet you could only barely hear the radio when you were moving (it's a noisy droptop).

it'd be one thing if it "integrated" into speakers in the doors and dash when it was in the car, but i'll bet it did not in 1958.

    doody.
